All you Mustang and Merlin experts...

This photo is cool in that it shows a lot of oil coming out the breather line. What causes this? Is it more high rpm operation, or was this guy out doing acro and maybe got some negative G in there?

Dis the P-51D-25 come with a -7, -9 or were they interchanged through production?

Just curious. Thanks.

If this is truly a breather line vent and the piston rings are as tired as the aircraft looks,
I'd surmise as a motorhead.. chronic excess crankcase pressure.

Most likely negative G or less than positive !G maneuvering causes this crankcase vent streaking. Current civilian Mustangs have the vents located below the wing chord line in the area of the bottom of the coolant scoop. This keeps the slop off the fuselage.
I believe the -25 came only with the -7 motor. The -30 would have had the -9 motor......someone might double check this.

sorry guys... it's a D-20-NA in the 44-723xx range....

the panel behind the windshield above the instrument panel is smooth - on D-25-NA's there were 'bumps'

sorry to be picky

the whole production of P-51D's came with V-1650-7 - the P-51H had the -9

of course some earlier a/c were retrofitted with -9's but it wasn't production standard at any time during the D- production

Wow, Martin! You could see that it had no 'bumps'?.........I need glasses!!
These are the two small raised 'ridges' on the angled section of the instrument panel glare shield. Good catch.
Didn't the -30 use the -9 motor? Or just the P-51M and P-51H?

Thx,
VL

interesting:

Report NA-5865 [P-51D-5-NA and P-51D-5-NT] of 22nd March 1944 mentions V-1650-7 only

AN 01-60JE-1 of 5th April 1944 [P-51D-5 and British Mustang IV] only mentions V-1650-7

AN-01-60JE-2 of 31st January 1945 [P-51D-5, -10, -15, -20, -25 and P-51K-1, -5, -10, -15 and British Mustang IV] only mentions V-1650-7

AN 01-60JE-1 of 6th November 1945 [P-51D and P-51K] (Revisions through 17th December 1947) mentions V-1650-7 or -3

T.O. 1F-51D-1 [F-51D] (replacing AN 01-60JE-1) of 20th January 1954 mentions V-1650-3, -7 or -9A for F-51D and V-1650-3 or -7 for the TF-51D; and also refers to the F-51H equipped with V-1650-9

the latter is confirmed in AN 01-60JF-1 [P-51H] of 15th October 1945 (Revisions through 30th September 1946) and T.O. 1F-51H-1 [F-51H] (replacing AN01-60JF-1) of 25th February 1954; also in AN 01-60JF-2 [P-51H] of 10th February 1945

finally T.O. 1F-51(T)D-1 [TF-51D] (replacing AN 01-60JFB-1) of 5th December 1953 (Revisons through 10th August 1954) mentions V-1650-3 or -7 for TF-51D's

so you may be right Vlado, that the late D-30's got the V-1650-9A... but this needs to be verified....

Cordially
Martin

follow up:

T.O. No. 03-20-01 [List of Propellers and Governors for Service Aircraft] dated 15th May 1945 (replacing version dated 22nd May 1944) mentions as follows

P-51D = V-1650-3 or -7
P-51K = V-1650-3 or -7
P-51H = V-1650-9

N.B. I've got a stash of Packard Merlin Bulletins at home.... need to have a close look at 'em soonest !

Interesting. Thanks, guys.

Scotty -- the breather comes from the valve covers and any time you're negative the oil goes to the top of the valve cover and then out the breather. If you look at photos of Patty Wagstaff flying Princess at the Gathering you'll see a big oil stain down the right side because of going negative (yes I had a heart attack but have recovered). Jim

There's a photo is Jeff Ethell's T-6 book "Pilot Maker" showing a RAAF P-51D after the pilot got a little carried away doing a acro demonstration. The whole side of it is covered in oil.

Hallo Martin,

Could you please show us a clear picture of these 'bumps'...?
