And its amazing to see that ME-163B-1a Komet and how it looks like it was taken straight from the battlefield and not restored.

It looks to me that the Komet has its original German paint - camouflage and markings, plus remnants of the Foreign Evaluation 'FE' tail number applied by the USAAF. It's heavilly worn, probably in preservation rather than in service, but that's a real time capsule. Looks like it's got (at least part of) it's engine.

Does anyone know the history of this Komet? I seem to vaguely remember that this airplane might have come from a complex airplane trade to a Canadian museum.

This aircraft has been in the NASM collection since 1954. A reasonable potted history can be found below.

Cheers,
Richard

Thanks for the clarification, Richard. Which airplane am I thinking of? I remember there being 2 Komets in the same museum in Canada and one of them being traded elsewhere?

Two Me163s were held by the Canadian National Museum and one was traded in a complex exchange that saw the Komet go to the NMUSAF and the 109F (ex Guy Black and Russia) go to Canada.

The stained glass is recent. The one John Dobberting did for 355th and donated to Littleton Church (Anglican) near Steeple Mordem is simply awesome. I don't know who did this one of the 355th at Savannah but I can find out

Is it me, or would this make a nice place for the NMUSAF to relocate the Tulare B-17 to?

Hi Bill,
I realise that of course I'm not familiar with the type of glass you mention, which makes my earlier post a bit irrelevant - hardly a first, though.

Can you elabourate on the glass in the Ltttleton Church? (It would be Steeple Morden, BTW.)
Cheers

Banndit - I noticed that you happened to take a picture of the Aces roll and spotted my father Bert Marshall right in the middle of your pic?

The 355th Memorial at Savannah is nice but pales in comparison to the one at Steeple Morden - which has a real 51 Prop and large marble pantheon. Thanks to our pepetual fund and the great help from our firends in the UK, that Memorial will be maintained as long as there is a banking system in UK.

We are considering doing the same thing at Davis Monthan to incorporate all of the 355th (Viet Nam, Afghanistan Iraqi Freedom and beyond) at the home base and we will vote on that this April. I'm currently working on the Roll of Honor list for all the fallen and/or captured/MIA for all 355FG,TFW and FW

JDK - I (think) have shots of the Steeple Morden and Dobertin Glass - If you PM you email I will send to you. I have problems uploading to this site - so you can post if you wish.

John Dobertin is a true artist in the old school of lead and stained glass and the one he crafted and donated to the church is immense - on the scale (and quality) of the Rennaisance renditions.

Regards,

I was taking pics for my father in law at the time. He flew with Pisanos in the past, and he had met (and drooled over) Ann Baumgartner before, so that's why those shots were in there.
