"Blondie" poses with Capt Martin and Lt Young her crewmates in the 452nd BG. Blondie received the Air Medal for 10 combat missions including the final leg of a Russian Shuttle mission. Blondie's crew position was in the nose with Lt Young the navigator and wore custom fitted ear phones and oxygen mask.

OK...OK cute doggie and all that BUT...THE AIR MEDAL? TO A DOG?
IMHO that kinda diminishes the award that was given to actual airmen.

Dad to son, "OH, WOW. You got the Air Medal. "
Son, "Yeah. BFD! So did a dog."

Mudge

If it's any consolation Mudgey, the human crews in the ETO usually received the Air Medal after only 5 trips.

Besides I doubt Ike showed up to present the medal personally

No disrespect meant, want to go 5 missions in a heavy bomber over Germany? Perhaps not.

I think all those guys earned every award they got, in person or posthumously. :?

Easy there...my original comment was made entirely tongue-in-cheek. I am quite aware of the multitude that never made it past trip #1. IMO a colored ribbon doesn't come close to compensating those who rendered the service.

You've got to remember than these mascots were huge for morale and were loved by all. I'm sure someone gave up his Air Medal most willingly and the citation must have been a master piece!! I've got shot of a Marine on Iwo with a kitten, a tanker in Italy with a donkey and loads of dogs. I bet that Blondie did more for these guys morale than the Andrew Sisters!

Nothing a little warm weather and a couple of margaritas wouldn't cure!

So have you dug yourself out of the drifts yet?
