P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer.

S: Took hammer away from midget.

flying out of the AAF base just outside pocatello idaho ditched in american falls reservoir on two different occasions while on training missions. strangely they ditched fairly close to each other as it was on the runway heading. in the mid 70's they drained the dam to build a new one and the tails of the planes became visible so the navy was called in to blow the tails off the planes which they did. I love our ...uh..."government of the people by the people and for the people" the aircraft were very intact until that act of vandalism.

they were exposed when the reservoir was lowered to build a replacement dam.

Where in the reservoir?

This is the only one I know about.

they took off and experienced engine problems and ditched in the reservoir.

I have also heard a nice P-47 was near the shore and was blown up as well.

the P-47 crashed in the back water area on the Fort Hall indian reservation. My neighbor was at the crash scene. the plane went nose first into the marshy mud at a high rate of speed and he said there was nothing but a big hole with twisted metal. the pilot was thrown clear but was dead.
there is an alleged P-47 in the hills around Pocatello but I was never able to find any corroboration of that one.

I think the Fort Hall P-47 must be different because several Boise area folk who knew their aircraft spoke of it in the 70's to me. I believe John Lane once commented on it here on WIX also.

It was described to me to be in very good shape. I think it was blown up before 1972-73.
