It's not so much "cloak and dagger" as it respect for the owners privacy in not wanting information or pictures of a restortation to "get out" in general circulation with out their permission.

Look at it this way, if you have spent several years and tons of cash on what should be an award winning aircraft, would you want someone else ruining your "unveiling" with info and images posted for all to see?

Some don't care and look for the pre-roll-out publicity, others are more reserved.

As an individuual with a few inside connections at museum's and restoration shops, I would never take photos with out permission and NEVER publish or post them with out permission.
If I ran around getting in everywhere and taking pictures and posting info and future plans with out anybody's consent, access to many of these shops could be jeaopardized.

Since I consider many of them to be friends, I'm not willing to just blather away on all the "inside" stuff I know. I respect people's requests and unless they say they don't care, I'm not going to publish anything.

Now if I was a full time journalist and I was visiting a project for coverage, they would know why I'm there and what was possibly going to happen.

It's too easy to piss somebody off. If that happens doors slam shut.

With this particular project at Mid West Aero, I was given a pretty in depth look at the details. I sensed that they were proud of them. I refrianed from taking photos because it just didn't feel right. I rather have the friendship than the "glory" of showing the world what's about to come out of the hanger.

A little long, but that's the way I look at things.
Blue skies,
Jerry

Well said Jerry.............

JimH...Not sure which photo you're referring to re. Happy Jack's Go Buggy, but if it's the one with the checkered nose, I may be wrong but I think that is the 78th FS paint job. Ilfrey was 79th FS and their paint job was the one shown here:

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. :P

Well said Jerry. I was there in November for a different reason and Mike did give me a tour of his shop. I agree with your thoughts.

I've been helping Mike out on this one and was never asked to keep my big yap shut. But, I'm trying that approach anyway

I think a minor problem with the photos in this post is that photos #7, 8, & 9 are of Butch Schroeder's P-47 "Hairless Joe" and F-6 Mustang "Lil' Margaret" in Butch's hanger, not at Mid West Aero's Facility.

Well their first mistake was using green instead of blue. ;)

That's not too terribly far from me. About 3 hours. Maybe I can plan a trip down there one of these days.

It appears that Geraldine most likely was in for some servicing of some sort. I know Midwest Aero has done detailed work on a few Mustangs which they haven't restored themselves, or it might just be in for some winter maintenance.

Several months ago Mike stated over at AirShowBuzz that one of the Mustangs he was restoring might be finished with some patina. I look forward to seeing what he meant by it. Might this be the special project? I always look forward to seeing the next aircraft to come out of Midwest Aero's shop with eager anticipation.

Patina would be any sort of grime or dirt that is picked up with exposure to the elements. Mike V. mentioned this within a thread, in regards to the patina on Twilight Tear and Princess Elizabeth, which a lot of people seem to favor over the highly polished finishes. The heavy amount of such 'patina' on Twilight Tear is shown to great detail in these photos...

This sort of look seems to add a wartime feel to the aircraft.

Kinda like the bugs, grime, oil, exhaust stain, faded and scratched paint on that ol' dog of mine! I love it!
