...and there was me thinking I was all alone.

I was refused access to photograph at one museum in the US because a certain publishing house had 'exclusive rights'.

The museum management advised that they would be 'boycotted' by the publishing house if images appeared in the UK press, and this would have a prejudicial effect on visitor numbers.

The arrogance of it!

Thanks bdk, but I work for American Aeronautical Foundation, not Challenge. We are an indenpendant non-profit 501(c)3., But now saying that, yes Challenge started it but has only chair seating now. But if someone is looking for Leary's email address, please PM me and I will ask Challenge people about getting it for you.

American Aeronautical Foundation owns and operates on donations only now a days , the B-25J "Executive Sweet", 1948 Percival Prentice, and soon to be C-47B come April.

Oh man, like I gotta hold my sides and put some duct tape around and over my head....When I contacted Challenge Publications back in the last Century (mid 70's) I got the run-around for quite a while before I could finally get to talk to MO on the phone, and then it was yeah, yeah, sure, we'll get 'em back to ya..click- dial tone... Has never ever never responded to any letters sent to him....and I imagine that if he doesn't "Know You" and you don't have something he needs or wants to photograph....I imagine that your electronic message will be electronically deleted... without even so much as a thought from the Great MF...er.. opps..Great MO

Michael and Challenge love to print and NOT pay and then keep the photos.

I got involved with these two some few years back - and WON !

I had an article and photos published and then waited, and waited, and waited, for my writers payment. By the way it was a multi-page article with a number of support photos.

I wrote several times to Challenge. Of course I got no reply.

I then decided that I would not kick the dog or punch the wife. They had nothing to do with Michael pi....g on me.

There are several ways to skin a cat ..... so I am told. If I could not get my payment for my labour from Challenge direct then I would see about getting it another way.

I chose to advise the local magazine distributer that he was a co-party to copyright fraud by selling my work for no payment to me. I advised that if I was not paid by a certain date I would take up the matter with a legal firm and no further correspondence would be entered into.
At the last minute I got a call from the distribution house who said 'Stop! lets talk'. 'Sorry, that opportunity has come & gone' I replied. 'OK, OK how about we get the Challenge rep to talk with you'.
Hmm! OK. Never burn all your bridges....

A Mr Munch called me. (no, not that great Law & Order TV show Cop). He claimed he did not work for Challege but was in financial dispute settlement. (!).
I said I wanted to be paid, if not I would go ahead.
Eventually he agree to pay me if I signed a no-continue agreement if I accepted the payment that we agreed on.
The check arrived in due course along with a sheet to sign and return. This I did (or maybe it was the back of the cheque).

In short I got my money and then some. It would have cost Challenge a whole lot less to have just paid me in the first place.

In short guys, think outside the square to get paid. Better still have absolutely NOTHING to do with O'Leary and Challenge, and tell your buddies the same! Savy!

It is unfortunate to acknowledge that Michael has profited over the years from other people's work.
All those books and articles of his, including his regular paid work in the English magazine, Aeroplane, (Shame, Shame!) have a huge number of unacknowledged photos and material that came from other people.
If Challenge paid the contributers as they should be paid the magazine would be a much bigger and better publication. Instead it has by default encouraged competition using contributers who were not paid by Michael & Challenge.

In some ways I look forward to the day that I hear Michael has met his demise in a mid-air photo shoot accident. He will have had more than one close-call by now.

Any comment Michael?

My only thoughts will be with the guys he took out with him, not for him.

On the other hand it might even be that Michael will one day be 'invited' to go around to the back of the hangar at some aero meet and meet with 'blunt force trauma' from an unhappy unpaid contributer.
There must be an awful lot of those around by now. What color is red Michael?

Michael and Challenge have passed their use by dates.

Remember. Under NO circumstances contribute to Challenge Publications or Michael O'leary. YOU WILL NOT GET PAID. It is that simple.
DO tell all your friends the same.

PS. For the record I no longer read any Challenge Publications. Yet another lost contributer and Challenge Publications magazine buyer. Their loss, not mine.

You all make sure that any photographs you submit are registered with the library of congress, right? You can use form VR and submit as many unpublished photographs for one processing fee as you want. You can submit them on a cd or dvd – low res jpg's are fine. Then, when somebody uses them without permission you can sue for copyright infringement. The penalties are substantial.

Hmm I bet that would be that Hollywood museum, known at Chino as the Ego squadron that closed a few years ago. Other names heard were a word for untruths that rhymes with flying.
