BOULTON PAUL DEFIANCE

Wed Jan 30, 2008 6:20 pm

Hi all
I meet this guy yesterday who told me his father was flying a " Boulton Paul Defiance" air craft in WW2. I have never heard of this particular air craft; does anybody know of any of these air craft on display anywhere? are there any left?

Defiant, I believe, sort of a TBM look a like. Not effective against high performance German planes., lacked speed and had its guns in a turent rather than wing guns. kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

There is a complete example at the RAF Museum at Hendon and also a reproduction at the Boulton Paul Aircraft Heritage Centre alongside some substantial wreckage. I believe these are the only examples.

Designed as a fighter from the outset. It initially worked well, taking the enemy by surprise, until they learned how to deal with it and decimated the squadrons. It did move on to do sterling work as a makeshift night fighter. Altogether an idea that didn't really work but that does not detract from the bravery of it's crews. The Boulton Paul Association have a superb replica http://homepage.ntlworld.com/markansell/bpa/index.html

Like most aircraft, there's a lot of half-truths and myths about the reason the type failed, but it also fulfilled an important role as an early night fighter. Not a great aircraft, but like most obscure types, there's fascinating history. We published a book on the type, by Mark Ansell.

Feel free to ask any questions and I'll do my best to answer them, or get Mark! The previous posts are great and accurate on the survivors, thanks guys.

I always kind of liked the Defiant; just strange enough to be interesting
