Recieved an email today from Jon Fugere, son of the engineer Don Fugere on my Dad's plane, "Noah Borshuns". He had found me via a Google search for the plane, and sent a photo of the crew taken right after the mission to Akita, the last mission of the war. My Dad, Lt. Jack Turner, was the co-pilot and Art Dipple was the commander.
So for the complete set, here is a great photo of Noah (Thanks Scott!!), it's crew and photos of the NW field runway and 315 HQ stone fence that I photographed while on Guam 4 months ago

Russ, I have always wondered what the reason for the planes name was? Did the crew have some kind of political stand or was it just something that rimed together?

Dad always maintained that the crew was proud that they never missed a mission (quite a feat with the early Wright 3350s - a tribute to engineer Fugere and the entire crew) - exactly as Martin points out was indeed the origin of the name - no aborted missions.
Something else that he said that I have never seen was that with each mission they painted a picture of a baby denoting a successful mission in keeping with the theme...
C'est le guerre (?)

Edward, we're working on the 315th BW serial numbers. Some of the Group Histories don't have a good rundown on serials to ship numbers. The 331st did a pretty good job, but the research continues.

I have a few more photos of Noah Bortions in the 315th Wing files. It'll take me a bit to dig them out, though.

I really enjoy the "then and now" photos together on one thread!

Scott,

Thanks for your research. I have never seen a port side view of this a/c, either <hint>

It may be an early model serial number due to the long chord cowl flaps.

snj5 and others,

Just as an FYI, the photo posted at the top of this thread was made possible by a widow here in Tulsa who brought in a box of her husband's negatives/slides, and allowed us to scan them. She said that her husband had taken all of the photos. Below are the threads where I originally posted them, along with some additional photos of related B-29s. I'm not bothered by the post at all, just wanted to give credit where credit is due. She was a really nice little old lady, and was sweet to share. Maybe these threads have other B-29 pics that folks here might be interested in.

No sweat! I just wanted to make sure that a sweet little old lady was at least remembered for feeding our collective habit. Keep posting away! I'm certainly not miffed. :)

That's Jack Bauer - second from right in the back row!

Great photos by the way - thanks for sharing them.

The Bell plant seems to have done things a bit differently when it comes to production line changes. I've got a T.O. somewhere that gives serial number breaks for the various changes but Bell didn't always incorporate the changes too rapidly. All the B airplanes were delivered to the 315th Wing Groups in two batches, one at the Third Phase fields and the balance at Herington just prior to heading overseas. Neat little research project for me to dig further into!
