NARA holdings online ...

Fri Jan 25, 2008 8:44 pm

FYI:

I was tipped off by a friend that the US National Archives has teamed with Footnote.com (http://www.footnote.com/), to present zillions of NARA documents (military, civilian, political, etc., etc.) and photographs online ... they are all scanned at high-rez.

You can sign up for a 7-day FREE trial, and past that it's $8/month or $60/year. After seeing what they had, I signed up for a year ...

I've been 'virtually' lost in their stacks for a few days now. Here's just a couple of things I dug up, for example ... these have been greatly reduced in size for this post (all photos include good captions with dates, etc.):

This first photo was highly interesting to me because it's dated 21 June 44 -- just before Hofer climbed aboard P-51B QP-X for what would be his last takeoff from Debden. This would also be the last photo taken of Hofer that we know about. He was going along as a spare on the first 8th AF OPERATION FRANTIC Russia Shuttle mission, but true to form he didn't turn back and followed the task force to Russia. Troy White's excellent book on Hofer details for the first time what followed on a later mission during the Shuttle operation ... on 2 July, during the Budapest mission flown from Foggia, Italy, while returning to Foggia Hofer perished over the twin airfields at Mostar, Yugoslavia, crashing into the gun emplacement that shot him down!

Many MACRs are currently available ... they'll eventually have them all online. Here's a couple of pages from Ralph K. Hofer's file:

I signed up and I can't figure out how to save files on my computer as JPEGS (or what do you use as a viewer to look at the files you save, and what format are they in??)

Wade, thanks for the post. I signed up for a year too! :)

Mark, when you choose an image an Adobe Flash Player window (or page) opens up. There's a button named SAVE. Click on it and the image will be saved with the extension .JPG in your computer.

Like DDDUUUUUHHHHH!!!

I was typing in the new filename, and assuming that the computer would put an extension on it. When I tried "filename.JPG" it worked fine. Go figure.

Thank you

Yeah, I had the same problem ... I use PhotoShop Elements 3.0, and just saving a file without MANUALLY adding the .jpg suffix to whatever filename I chose for each photo didn't work for me.

Even then, when I got into PhotoShop and click a thumbnail image to open it, I'll sometimes get a small window saying something to the effect that the filename may be incomplete or damaged, etc. I just click "OK", and it opens fine. I then immediately save the image as a .tif file for archival purposes ... I then delete my original saved .jpg.

When saving multiple documents (MACRs) or photos I've noticed that every once in a while a page of a MACR, for example, won't "take", and I can't open it. I then have to go back and make SURE I get that .jpg suffix in there. They all run together after a while and it's possible that I forgot to add the .jpg suffix.

Long story, and I'm sure I'm doing it the hard way, but the above works for me - if I KNOW that I've added the .jpg suffix, all seems to work fine.

Same here! I just found a picture of 3 P-38 pilots and they were named in the caption and one was from my home town! Will have to do some research.
