Visit to Collings - Houston

Tue Jan 22, 2008 12:16 pm

Over the weekend I was in the Houston area with my Boy Scout Troop and we were able to make a quick visit to the Collings Foundation hangers at Ellington Field.

I would like to thank Rick H for his gracious invitation and hospitality!

Hey Rick,
Are those two Mig-21's the ones that used to be up at Sherman, TX. in Dave Straits hanger ? I think at the time I seen them I was told they where owned by a couple who both intended on flying them at airshows as a husband and wife mig team...

Zane,

Were you able to make it down to Lone Star as well?

Yes the two Migs belong to Oscar and Elaine Vickery. Unfortunately those plans have changed due to health reasons.

All of the good things that are happening down here in Houston can be attributed to a talented and dedicated bunch of volunteers. I count myself lucky to be a part of the group.

Rick,
Is UH-1 N911KK still part of the collection?
And what about B-25 Tondelayo?
Regards,
Andy Marden

Andy, UH-1E is most definitely still part of the collection ! When Zane and the boys visited she was around the corner in another hangar undergoing its 100 hr inspection. We expect her to join the Wings of Freedom tour when the bombers get to Texas.

Tondelayo is also definitely part of the Collings Foundation. Based in Houston for many years, the decision was made several years ago to add her to the Wings of Freedom tour for the full season. Her winter maintenance is now done at New Smyrna Beach with the B-17 and B-24.

Scouts

I was a Scout leader one year for my son's grade. I wasn't too good at it, but did take all who wanted to go for a J-3 Cub ride. For liability reasons we did not call it an official scout function. All but one boy got parents permission and flew. That one boy himself was not willing to go .

I have been an Assistant Scoutmaster for 13 years and was a Scout when growing up. The Collings Foundation-Houston has run numerous Aviation Day Camps with the Scouts that cover all of the requirements for the Aviation Merit Badge. Occasionally we have partnered with the local EAA Chapter 12 and done the Young Eagles flights on the same day.
