Warbird Information Exchange

I thought I'd give an update on the progress of the restoration of my Stinson L-5G Sentinel 45-35050. The majority of the work is being done by Lanny Parcell at Cowtown Aerocrafters in Justin, TX. They are doing a great job!


My Airframe being worked on in the hangar.



Left and Right wings done and ready for silver.


Woodwork on the tail completed.


Completed preliminary installation of the belly stringers.


Pic of the cockpit as of now.

I'll post more pics as the restoration progresses. She should be flying sometime in July, hopefully in time for Oshkosh. I can't wait!

Hey Taylor looking great , Question, whay are there two different flavors of OD green in the cockpit area? Just thought it would all be the same? Thanks.

There was some previous restoration work done prior to my purchasing the aircraft... that paint variation is the work of the former owner... but in reality, L-5's were thrown together during the war without regard to specific shades of zinc chromate. I'm an authenticity nut, but in this case I just tell myself that the originals probably looked mismatched too.

Here's a little update for ya'll!

The belly work shown last update is finally completed. Lanny Parcell had to fabricate a new recog. light and camera bay panel. He did a great job!

Cockpit... Doors and fairings hung for pre-cover fitting. Lanny matched the late WWII L-5 yellow-green primer perfectly.

I've finally gotten all of the correct gauges. Here is my panel. The gauges range from used to NOS, but they will all go in for overhaul and they will also be refaced to match eachother (same design, but cream paint instead of radium)...

For all you authenticity nuts (including myself) I am putting in all original equipment into my aircraft. I've been hunting down all of the original radio units for the aircraft and I've finally got them all. Here they are (minus the recievers... I forgot that pick):

Transmitter NOS

Antenna Relay NOS

BC-450 Reciever Control Box

BC-451 Transmitter Control Box NOS

Now for some recently overhauled parts...

Oil Cooler came out great! The people at Pacific Oil Coolers did a great job!

I'll eat off of this MA-4-5 any day!

Taylor, great project. Question..............were the wings already restored or new???? I did alot of asking questions to one of the sentinal group. I was looking at buying a project. One day I will consider it if they come up with a wing kit like there thinking about doing.

Great airplane, the L-5. But to put one together, lots of battles.

Another question......................you have the trailing antenna??

The wings I have had about 400 hrs on them. I have heard of the idea of a wing kit, but that is a lot of woodwork! As for the trailing antenna, the G-model did not have one, instead Gs had an An-104-A fixed antenna.

Well, after trying three times to read your thread title, I just grabbed em and clicked on it. Thank goodness I know your posts are safe lol!

what is the woodwork on the tail of? Maple? If taht's a good rendition of the pattern on the wood, it's almsot a shame to paint over it, isn't it? I'm so jealous of you! What a work of art!

bdk- Thanks! Yeah, Lanny sure knows what he's doing!

Clay- I re-titled the thread I'm not too sure what the wood is. I'll have to ask my dad (Forestry Major). The woodwork is exceptional on the L-5s due to the fact that they were made by veteran furniture makers in Wayne, MI. It's a shame to cover up such great craftsmanship
