In June 1955, I was just nine years old and had been on an outing to the South Coast of England with my father. Driving down the narrow lane from Beachy Head to Eastbourne, I think I first heard, then saw, a giant white bird - a Sunderland flying boat on a landing (sea-ing?) approach run. I'd seen plenty of warplanes, but this was so beautiful as, with a throaty drone it gently sank towards the sea and the Eastbourne beach. It disappeared from my sight as we went behind some low bank, and then that deep noise just suddenly stopped. I remember urging my father on - I was desperate to see the huge beast on the water - but my dad was strangely reticent, and soon turned off and away from the beach. But not before I glimpsed just a tail section above the waves. I often wondered what happened.

Then just last week, I found this: http://eastbournernli.org.uk/SunderlandAirCrash.html
