I have not gone to the NASM in D.C. yet, and there are a few others I am yet to see, but so far this is the best I have ever been to. The personel go out of their way to get you answers and to grant your requests, and about the most friendliest people to boot.

excuse my ignorance but why does the navy museum have a p40-b?
and what is the first plane displayed as a crash(not the sbd).

The crashed a/c is an F4F Wildcat...recovered from Lake Michigan.....The reason the P-40 is displayed...it represents one of the AVG Flying Tiger aircraft that served in China prior to the U.S. getting involved in the conflict with the Japaneese....A lot of the volunteer American Tigers resigned from the U.S. Navy to join the AVG....so that's the conection

Great pics! I visited the museum a couple of years ago, and shot a ton of pics of the P-40. Anybody know what the story is behind the chipped paint on the cowl? I though maybe the museum let somebody make molds to make cowl panels for other restorations, and some paint came off in the process.

I once ran into a guy who claimed to help in the restoration of the plane..he claimed it had P-40N wings, modified to represent a "C." Any truth to that?
