Amazing!

I've seen the video before but, had to watch it all the way through again.

Have you seen the Russian version where they hit the trees?

Regards,

Art S.

Between 1:30 and 1:20 remaining in the video...the chopper's shadow actually appears in the shot briefly. Notice that, then look where the shadows of the trees are...damned near straight down.

Wow.

Really nothing special if you are a good pilot. THe whole key to be able to do that is that you need to know the area and have checked it out to be darn sure there are no wires there. You also have to have made the decision that is you have a power failure (unlikely in a turbine) that you are going to be so far out of the envelope for a successful autorotation that you are going to die.

Now what was really cool was one year as white water season was starting and they opened the dam on the Gauley River here in WV, we flew up it in the Astar. The water was about 15 feet deeper than normal, the entire river was foam, we were down in the gorge, making 120kts with the windshield wipers on because of all the spray on the chopper. Now that would have been an awesome video.

They are a lot of fun

I read the setup for the video somewhere on the internet but I've never been able to find it again. The pilot is MBB's demo pilot and they made 2 or 3 runs at slow speed (less than 60 knots) over the proposed route and then a couple more at speed but at a higher altitude for him to get his cues for when he needed to make altitude changes and timings for the cameras. They were very systematic on the way they approached it and it was kinda interesting to read that while it looks "ad lib" it was actually very precisely choreographed.
