Actually, this picture was taken quite a few years ago. I had taken the glare shield off the airplane and mounted my old Olympus OM-1 camera to the top of the instrument panel. This was the old, manual type camera that you had to actually wind the film up by hand (not automatically, like today's film cameras). I would set the automatic timer and roll inverted. What I didn't think of, however, was that when I would roll upside down, the beard would just cover up my face and make it impossible to see.
So I had to tuck the lower portion of the beard into my shoulder harnesses and then take pictures. And remember, I didn't know how the pictures were going to turn out until after the film was developed (again, unlike the new cameras with "instant gratification"), so I've got quite a few pictures similar to this one that jussssst didn't quite work out. Frankly, this isn't actually the best one of the batch (it took several flights to get the good one), but it's the best one I could find for now.
