I think Carl maybe right about the F6F being Bill's. The 2 F6s had different patterns of camo and Bill's -3 went straight down the fuselage while the POF a/c curved down to the leading edge of the wing.

The paint job shows it clearly to be Bill's (he's a great guy BTW lives aviation and flew B-25s in WWII).
Bill and Jack Lenhardt took in a few shows in S. Cal during that timeframe.

The paint job on the POF Hellcat as seen in the registry was applied to the airplane well after 1974. The previous paint job on the Hellcat also had the curved demarcation between the two blues but I have no idea what paint job the airplane may have had in 1974. The registry says Compton did not acquire his Hellcat until '75 although I suppose that could be an error. Was the Compton airplane already in the pictured scheme when Compton acquired it?

There's a number of photos in the registry inc at least 1 of the original scheme. I'm holding on to this is Bill's F6 :!:

Well, that being my very first air show, I don't really know which Hellcat it would have been. I remember it as the Air Museum machine, but that could well be because I got to know the airplane and Jim and Steve in later years...

I wonder if John Paul would know -- he was probably there.

I may have found the answer to my own question. The information listed beneath the picture of the Compton Hellcat in the registry gives an August '74 date so, either Compton acquired it prior to '75 or it was already in the tri-color scheme prior to his purchasing it. Not that any of this is of any importance, just interesting. (to me at least!)
