This may belong on the vintage forum but this forum gets the most notice. A few weeks ago as we were flying out of Randolph AFB heading for home, another crew member pointed down below to a shiny metal DC-6 sitting in the weeds at the edge of a small airport.
This was roughly south and east of Randolph, making it more or less east of San Antonio. I was all messed up on directions that weekend-I think we did climb out to the south or southeast since we made one big left turn and then kept an easterly heading back to the Sinkin' Sandbar. Anybody got anything on this old hauler? We weren't far from RAFB and still climbing so we got a fair look at it. John saw it first from the B-17 nose, got a good look and called it to my attention. I was sitting at Nav desk and only got one glimpse of it.

That sounds all too familiar. Homeowners assoc.s ...hmmmph. They have no complaints about a DC-6. They should have been in Dodgeville, Wisconsin when homeboy landed that C-97 on a 2,800' GA strip with his mains three feet outside the pavement on both sides!
However, Mr. McIvor seems to have to oil leak police on his side. Good for him for being responsible.
At least now, I kinda know what direction we flew out.

3000 feet? If he didn't smoke the brakes, good job. So what constitutes "light" GA aircraft? That guy is in for a world of headaches. The only consolation is that he is probably giving ulcers to the people who are complaining.

I watched the DC-6 leave New Braunfels to make the long cross country to Zeul . He did a couple of low passes and departed. Would sure liked to have seen him land though. He had practiced at NB for the landing but still I would like to have had the hot dog concession and seen it in person. I don't know why the neighbors are worried, after all there living in a fling community. Is that something like a commune?

If you guys think a DC-6 on 3000' feet is tight, then you would really freak over the Connie at Greenwood Lakes, NJ. Flown in, the strip is just over 2300', including overruns. It has a 100'+ cliff off of one end and pretty good drop off the other.

I was told they put new brakes on it, new tires, disarmed the reverser interlocks and gutted her as much as possible. Fuel for one takeoff and 30 min at minimum cruise. When she landed and got stopped, there wasn't enough room to even hook up the towbar on the nosewheel without climbing down the cliff. The had to winch her backwards to be able to tow her to the fianl spot.

Don't know if she is still there or not, as it's been over 20 years since I was last there.

I doubt it is there, or we would have heard about it on WIX. I would like to make an entry in the Locator just in case someone comes along to confirm or deny it's existance. I am trying to find the airport. Did you mean "Greenwood Lake", NY? If so where is the airport relative to the town?

I haven't been over there for awhile – I get a spooky feeling landing there for some reason – but it shows up on google maps.
