Warbird Information Exchange

I am headed to Vegas and am wondering if there are any wonder warbird sights to see while the wife goes shopping. . .

You can see a lot of fools throwing away good money that could be spent on airplanes. There were CAF, I think, guys at N Las Vegas airport with a B-26? Somehow, I am not sure it is still there or if it is active. There are some sightseeing flights there, and a nice cafe upstairs the FBO, but I don't know of much warbird stuff.

Take a little drive towards the Grand Canyon, and see Kingman, and Planes of Fame Grand Canyon Wing. I did that last time there, and it was great.

I would call first - I've been twice and both times they were closed - they have very small windows for opening hours.

Last time I was there, I drove up to Nellis (20 minutes) and watched F-22's in the pattern from the side of the road. It beats gambling.

No problem Tom. I also just realized that I don't have specific locations for many of the LV sites. Perhaps WIXers can follow the link and help by providing more accurate info.

Hi Mike, while at Lost Wages last week, I looked around a little at the airport for planes, but saw nothin arond the baggage or ticketing areas near Untied Airlines

Boulder City on the way to Hoover Dam has a nice airport to watch A/C in the pattern and kill some time. A group of HU-16's were there last time I was there. Or you can go to the north airport and have a buger upstairs and watch the happenings there as well.......

If you do get to GC Planes of Fame, sneak a look out back. Don't ask, just do it.

When I was there a few years ago, there were two VERY large wooden frames containing wing sections.

They looked just like B-24 wings to me, but I didn't get up close to verify.

Actually, that museum is in Valle, quite a bit beyond Kingman. http://www.valleairport.com/ If you go there, ask to see the Ford Tri-Motor at the airport hangar. They also have a nice collection of old cars at the airport that is neat to look at. http://www.planesoffame.org/aircraft.php?site=Valle
Go out to Williams on I-40 then head north on highway 64, It's about halfway to the Grand Canyon from Williams and it's totally in the middle of nowhere, right where that road intersects with 180 out of Flagstaff. The only reason I got to go was that my wife wanted to see the "Flintstones" tourist trap next door to it (which is about the saddest thing I've ever seen in my life). They have a decent collection there, it was worth the drive to see the Connie and the Northrop flying wing fighter plane (under a tarp, anyway). If you're going that far, don't miss Williams. That's the station for the Grand Canyon RR, which is very impressive in itself. Depending on the time of year, they run steam engines on their trains.
