Before everyone got the giggles, I was just saying that aircraft isn't going to fly again. You might get the dataplate to fly by rolling a 90% new aircraft under it, but if you really want to do that (and aren't just blowing smoke) there's projects out there more likely to fly and certainly a lot cheaper to rebuild.
Recovered, displayed wrecks have a role in showing people today what the sacrifices made in W.W.II were, which illustrate the risks and personal losses in a different way to zimming around the sky, useful though that is.
IMHO TIGHAR isn't worth getting excited about in this case - the IWM and RAFM are the ones to watch in the mix.
But if you really want to know, ask a pilot. Just don't cash the cheque.

look closely --- the stars and bars are visible on the upper wing. Thats pretty good. The most important part of a P-38 and the one that would be hardest to restore is the center section. the booms wings gondola etc etc can all be re-built. (glacier girl and white lightnin) UNTIL a PROPER survey is done by QUALIFIED mechanics (not TIGERS) no one knows the internal condition of the AC. quit killing it before you know ... and thanks for the SIG IDEA...it works well.

P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer.
S: Took hammer away from midget.
