Status of F-4D 66-7554 at NMUSAF

I've noticed for a few weeks now that 554 (2x MIG killer) is no longer parked in front of the restoration Facility.

I was curious if anyone here knew what has become of her since standing down from Gate Guard duty?

I am not sure where it went. There is a funny story that is out about those aircraft. The two gray F-4's that were on poles by the material Command Building were going to be replaced with an F-16, and an F-15. You always hear stories of how some bases really take care of their gate guards, and some don't. So it was going to be interesting to see what happened with these two F-4's. one of the concerns was how to get the gear down. Before anyone tried anything else the decision was made to try the aircraft systems. On their own power the gear extended and locked into the down position! Pretty good for two old birds that were up there for a while.

Notice at the bottom of that article that the Museum has a B-47 on it's wish list. Wonder where they could get one of those? Got any ideas Mustangdriver?

Plattsburgh AFB, (pronounced Plaaaaaaaaaaaaaatsburgh)

now closed, has a B-47 just corroding away. It was remarkably intact, 20 years ago.

How bad is it?

Plattsburgh? sucked worse than a Cat 5 hurricane.

The B-47? was basically towed off the flightline to the main gate. It was unusual because it was virtually complete, whereas most gate guard aircraft I had seen previously, were stripped shells. It had no obvious damage and received adequate routine care.

I last eyeballed it in the early 1990s. The base closed then, and I have no idea what 15 years of neglect and exposure to vandals might have done to it.
