Hey Mustangdriver, does the museum still have the one "extra" B-47 there is storage. Any plans for it at this point?

Location: Pittsburgher misplaced in Oshkosh
I was just talking to someone about it. I believe at one time it was going to be loaned at to MAPS. I am not sure if that is still going to happen, or if it is going to end up somewhere else.

MAPS is out of it now. It was going to cost over $100,000 to transport it up to Akron. Also, they wanted us to keep it inside to protect it. (Much better than how it is being taken care of now :D ) Our hanger is only so big, we might have been able to keep it inside, but we would have to put everything else outside!

I have talked to a few B-47 guys, and they were not always fond on the flight characteristics of the B-47. I am not sure that a flying example would be a good idea.

I happened to be between flights at the Pueblo CO airport back in the 70's or early 80's when they flew in the B-47 from the TUS boneyard and got to visit with the pilots afterward. They flew it on a FAA Ferry Permit which required they fly all the way with the gear down at 250 kts and at or below 10000'. They had only one external wing tank attached but the mount was still on the other wing. When they landed they touched down short of the runway in the dirt and rolled onto the runway with a front tire blown but they managed to taxi it to the ramp anyway. Both guys were experienced, retired USAF B-47 pilots but neither one had flown a B-47 in at least 10 years. Both agreed they had no desire to do it again. They sweated the fuel since the burn was much higher than they had planned and capacity was limited. They were glad to be there safely!

Recently the local paper had a recap of the Michael McCoy crash here in Central Florida. Apparently it was rather easy to exceed flight limits and pull the wings off. I always enjoy the B-47 portion of the movie Strategic Air Command.
