Tsgt USAF 1975-1983. Like Bill Greenwood said... I was in at the end of Viet Nam officially, but since I didn't go west of Wichita Falls, I don't consider myself a vet.

3½ lovely years in Albuquerque, back when you could walk 6 blocks north or south from Central Ave. and be out in the desert. Them days are gone forever.

I disagree. Even though I was overseas and in Desert Storm, you sir, are a Vet true and true. You served your country in the military and therfor, I stand here with my hand open to shake yours and say thank you for serving this great nation as a Vet.

Cold War, No War, Hot War, we are all Veterans.

I think he was saying he doesn't consider himself a 'Vietnam Vet'.

Never in a combat zone but lots of Unit Simulated Combat Missions, etc. in SAC. You don't have to be in combat to get killed or badly hurt but in practice, your fate is still the same.

If you have ever served in the Military, whether it was in wartime or peacetime, whether you were in combat or not, then you are a Veteran. Period. Your service to your country is very much appreciated by your countrymen. You should be proud of your service!

My Dad was a US Navy corpsman from 1952 through 1956, and a few more years in the Reserves after that. Like most Navy corpsmen, he was assigned to the US Marines. He did his sea tour in the Mediterranean, then finished out his hitch at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital.

As for me, I really wanted to join the US Air Force after high school. It was something that I had looked forward to for most of my youth. Unfortunately, I have a congenital heart condition, and I was considered to be unfit for service. Since I couldn't serve, I did the next best thing: I went to college, got my EE degree from Delaware Tech, and went to work in the Defense Electronics industry. If I can't fight, then the least I can do is to help build the weapons that those who can fight will need to do their jobs. I have nearly 28 years in with Raytheon, and I intend to work the rest of my career in this business (probably for this company). The need for a strong military will never go away.

God bless each and every Veteran, past, present, and future! The rest of us owe you a debt of gratitude that we couldn't possibly hope to repay.

Cheers!

What's sad is that Reservist & Guardsman with no active duty other than
for training aren't considered veterans. Even if they wear the uniform 20-30 years in. :? I suppose that nowadays that's really not a problem. :?

You don't have to be in combat or even in a major support job to be a vet, I didn't mean to set a bar for anybody else. Just for myself when I am at a football game or an airshow, and they ask for vets to stand for applause, I just feel that I should be the one clapping for the other guys. I went in, met my obligation, found it was not for me, nor was I doing anything useful. I was a mechanic in AF com unit that was used only in emergency. The timing was not favorable, it was after the Tet offensive. The Titanic was still afloat, but water was pouring in and the bow was going down. It was a different time, and a different place than what our Fathers or Grandfathers had in 1941. I am impressed by the many people who served and the range of experience.
