At the end of World War I it was called Armistice Day to mark the end of the "Great War."

I can't remember, but I THINK in Australia they still call it armistice day. James, I'm waiting for you to correct (shoot me down) on this one.

I should probably not say anything at all if I'm not totally sure, right? Whatever.

Cheers,

David

Got to participate in a Veteran's Day function at my daughter's school last week. Most of the vets were WWII guys from the local VFW and it was an honor being in the same room and being lumped in with them, though I didn't feel worthy. I certainly was in the company of heroes--to me anyway. I asked as many of them as I could about their service--where, when, what they did. I was awed and humbled at their stories. They invited me to their post today for a chili lunch and to watch the Packers whip the Vikings. Great fellowship...life is good.

Spent most of my time at Letterman General in San Francisco, trying to patch up broken bodies and missing limbs, and occasionally watching young men die of the same. I'm afraid the experiences made me a something of a pacifist -- nothing like watching young men die to make one wonder about the wisdom of slinging hot metal at each other!

Nonetheless, my hearfelt Thanks to all who have served, are serving, or are willing in tne future to serve their country...

I have a lot of respect for the medics - often overlooked for more high profile people.

IIRC, there's a statistic that ore Americans died in the 1919 Influenza epidemic than all those Americans killed in all the wars the US fought in the 20th C. Accurate or not, where are the memorials and rememberances for those sawbones?

Never hurts to guess - it's a problem when you claim to be authoritative. :D

What are we remembering? On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, the guns of the Great War fell silent and the killing stopped in 'the War to end all wars'.

Normally known as 'Remembrance (Sun)Day' here, and is essentially the same day marked in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Bear in mind that we have ANZAC Day (25 April) as well, which is probably the main military commemoration here in Australia. (I'll leave it for a Kiwi to coment on their half of ANZAC.)

The November memorial is a Sunday ceremony wherever the 11th falls, while the ANZAC day is always on the 25th.

I'm sure the irony of the first great war of the twentieth century was expected to be the war to end all wars. Another stat I've heard, again arguable, is that we killed more people in the 20th century than in the entirely of history prior to that date. It may be wrong, but the mechanisation of slaughter we have achieved since, say, 1880 is a remarkable acceleration on one person's killing power.

Wonder when we'll learn?

JDK, NOT a veteran.
