Warbird Information Exchange

Hi all,

My GF and I made our more-or-less annual pilgrimage to Wright-Pat over the weekend. As usual, I took a boatload of pics..I've been experimenting with "overhead" shots by putting the camera on the extended tripod and and..well, holding it over my head. Some came out better than others..it's hard to hold the camera steady enough to get a clean image.

Great museum, I just wish they would quit painting everything BLACK on the inside.

I'm a fan of wall paintings similar to the types displayed in action.
I was impressed by Stan Stokes murals at Bob Pond's musuems in the past.
It takes something static and the wall size mural adds historical perspective and an element of action to the display.

Thanks for that selection of photos, Steve. I was at the NMUSAF three weeks ago today! It was my first visit (it is a pretty good haul from Western Oregon). I pretty much spent most of the day in the WWII building....so your photos brought back scenes that are still vivid in my memory.

I hope to return to The Museum sometime fairly soon, maybe next fall. My wife wants to come along this time.

The purpose behind it comes from an artistic standpoint. THe dark hangars are supposed to symbolize pictures from a scrap book. The white hangars are supposed to symbolize a sterile enviroment.

Thanks for the compliments, guys! I'm another one lucky enough to have a girlfreind who loves going to airplane museums, and the NMUSAF in particular (she considers the museum's B-24 her namesake!)

As for the lighting, I wish the museum would brighten the ambient light a bit..the high-key spots are dramatic, but make photography very frustrating. I've spent literally decades working to get decent pics in there. Back when I was shooting film, I would lock the camera on a tripod and shoot 10-30 second time exposures (and still usually ended up with about a 30% "reject" rate.) Digital is a bit more forgiving, and also gives me the advantage of knowing immediately if I've gotten the shot (and I can delete and reshoot if necessary.)
