I was just reading "Baa Baa Black Sheep" and Pappy Boyingtons account of his flight of 6 Tomahawks that bellied in, in the remote area of Wenshan due to fuel starvation.

After the long journey to get back to Kunming he was told to go back to Wenshan, repair the birds and ferry them back. After many flights in liason aircraft with ground crew and supplies. 4 of the 6 were made flyable. But Boyington only ferried 2 back before he was told not to go back for the others.

So what do you all think? Still possible that some of the AVG's original Tomahawks are out there? I can't even find Wenshan on google earth.

Uh oh, the AVG, Pappy Boyington and Baa Baa Black Sheep all in one post. Get the meds out!

Seriously Shay, I think if any were left the Chicoms would try to eliminate any evidence that we helped them, much as the Soviets did after the war. Just my thoughts.

Wenshan is between Kunming and where (i.e. where were they coming from)? The written method of converting Chinese sounds to English sounds has changed since then.

Admitedly I agree that there are 2 chances of these Tomahawks panning out......slim and none.

Although I have to think that somewhere out there between China and Burma that a more substantial Tomahawk of the 99 survives besides the bits and peices found in Thailand.

I'm still waiting to see about the E model or Kittyhawk in Lake Dianch. I imagine money is the motivating factor there.

Actually it doesn't say. Pappy said he didn't know where they were going. They were providing fighter escort for a DC-2 carrying China's Generalissmo and first Lady. He thinks they might have heading towards Chungking. But they left the DC-2 to continue the trip without them after getting caught in a windstorms in the mountians. Thus depleting their fuel.

Just being hopeful. A AVG Tomahawk intact would be an amazing find.

China is very populated, even in the more remote areas. Unlikely, but who knows? Something might remain as a chicken coop.

Here is a thought...maybe the Chinese government does know where some of the AVG planes may be as well as some things from the Doolittle Raiders. I wonder if they would eventually put them up for sale at Wallyworld (otherwise known as Wal-Mart)
