That is excellent! From the trash????? I'm afraid that there is a lot of that going on these days. People throwing out classic and historic shots not realizing how important they are to others. I fear a lot of this stuff is also being lost from family members when their relative/veteran passes on. Sad....

I was going to make a joke that obviosuly these guys were paying homage to the mighty Merlin, but I think this is a serious scene of a lot of young guys praying to live through the day and maybe not to mess up and get any of their friends killed. It is a great historic mood type photo.

You're right, Bill.

That is serious stuff. My dad was in the 1st Armored Division and one of the few stories he really liked to tell was of having Mass on the hood of a jeep or truck on Sunday morning in North Africa. He was part of a forward maintenance battalion that wasn't up on the firing line, but told us that combat soldiers would often attend when possible and it really meant a lot to those brave men to be able to connect with something familiar from home. He liked the fact that men of all religions would gather together to share the moments of relative quiet and reflection.

Thanks for sharing the photos, guys--that brought back a memory of my dad's service that I haven't thought about since he passed.

I too cringe at the thought that many historic photos are being trashed.

A piano even in the second one! That is one of the most inspiring pics I've seen on here as of late.

Possibly a small portable foot pump organ. My aunt and uncle restored some of those that were just a bit bigger. Pianos would lose there tune bouncing along to the place of service. That would sound great. Today you could just get your ipod out.
It's nice Uncle Sam took care of every need for the Armed Forces. It must have been a great comfort.
I wonder what the choir sounded like?
