I just saw this in an article on the AOL homepage regarding the search for Steve Fossett.

Aviator's Fate Puzzles Search Crews
By TOM GARDNER,AP

...In a stark illustration of the region's remoteness, searchers have discovered six old plane crashes that had not previously been identified since they began the intensive hunt for Fossett on Tuesday.

Crews are marking crash sites discovered during the Fossett search and will return later to examine them in detail. No human remains have been found, which is no surprise in a region where coyotes and mountain lions are prevalent. ...

If nothing else good comes out of this tragedy lets hope these 6 wrecks yield for us a restorable P-43, maybe a P-48 or P-66, a...

Will we ever hear or will some Sierra Club type group rush their salvage trucks to the sites first?

BTW does anyone know if some Restricted Areas in the search area have a temporary waiver?

This was posted on the Citabria Pilots Forum....

Would you like to help find Steve Fossett?

Some of you know that I work for Amazon Web Services (a separate arm
of Amazon.com). One of the Web Services I work with is called
Mechanical Turk, and it allows people to perform tasks and submit the
results for use by computers. You can help search satellite imagery,
looking for Steve. See http://www.mturk.com/mturk/preview?grou ... EZJZG21T60 for more info, and www.mturk.com to
learn how to sign up as a "worker".

The basic idea is to enroll as many people as possible to search
these images for any sign of the aircraft.

I'd like to enlist everyone to help look for him. This is not a
commercial pitch…
Mike

They could probably use some help![/url]

Aren't most satellite photos months if not years old? If this works maybe WIX should be canvassing the world for warbird wrecks in the same fashion.

I think these are real time pics. I hope someone is successful. Unfortunately, a Citabria that crashes and burns leaves very little signature in a black and white image--just some blackened tubing and engine mass among the trees and rocks. That will be very difficult to locate in the rough terrain.
Sad to say, but the timeline doesn't bode well for Fossett....

i don't want to be negative about fossett's odds of survival, so take heart in today's national newspaper.......... a 76 year old woman survived 2 WEEKS in the oregon wilderness while on a bow hunting trip with her hubby recently. a mishap ocurred, & they became separated, rescue crews scoured the land till they found her, & still kicking. fossett has the savvy & guts for survival. if that old bird in oregon could hang in their for that time period..... just think what "mcgiver" fossett could do!!!

I'm sure they created a set of satellite image files taken after Fosset's disappearance and that's what were looking at.

Does anyone know what kind of aircraft they discovered while looking for Fosset? Civil, military?

I hope they find him alive. It would be a shame for such an adventurous and daring man to be lost on such a simple flight in such a simple airplane.

My hopes are with him and his family.

Cheers,

David

I installed the update which shows the recently updated view for the area, which shows up as a different colored box from a distant view and the markers placed by people helping to look in various areas. It was kind of neat, you could ask for a new area to look in, and it would provide a new Lat/Long for you to search through, then it will ask if you want to confirm you searched it.

It almost made me feel good about sitting in front of the "Black hole of time"
