Warbird Information Exchange

The CAF DFW Wing will host their annual "Warbirds On Parade" event on Saturday, September 8, at their home base at Lancaster Airport (KLNC) just south of Dallas. Here is a link to their web page with full info:

We will have Chuckie there, and she will be open for tours. Please drop by and say "Hi!".

In addition to the vintage aircraft display, they will also be hosting a car/truck show. Ford Mustang owners will be able to have their car photographed in front of a P-51 Mustang.

I just got back and on my own behalf, anyone reading this forum who came - Thanks! This was, at least from my vantage point, one of the best turnouts we've ever had, both in planes and people. Thank you VFM for bringing 3 airplanes. Thanks from me to Flight of the Phoenix museum in Gilmer for bringing several aircraft. Thank you to Jim Cavanaugh and the Cavanaugh Flight Museum for bringing not only the Fury, but also the Bell 47. Thanks to Bruce Stringfellow and the Cold War Air Museum, our partners on the Lancaster Airport who have been great in helping us at every turn with events we hold at the airport. Thanks from me to the units & individuals who brought the following aircraft which I was unable to fully identify (or just can't remember what unit they're assigned to) - A-26 "Spirit of Waco", "Tora, Tora, Tora" Zeke, the Ryans, Texans, Stearmen, and Cub. Thanks to the vintage car owners and military vehicle and reenactors who came as well. It really livened up the place to see people in period flight garb climbing in and out of the airplanes as they toured the aircraft themselves.

Thanks to all of the people who drove and flew in. Without the people, it'd be pointless to have all these great planes gathered together.

'twas a great day, indeed! Sadly, I just missed being in Bill's Chuckie engine start photo. I was the Fire Guard, and I was standing about 2 feet outside the left edge of the photo

Dean's personal highlights of the day: (in no particular order)
- The departure of the Cavanaugh Flight Museum's awesome Sea Fury T.Mk.20. That R-3350 with those short exhaust stacks sounds simply unbelievable! At idle, it pops and snorts and sounds just like a top fuel dragster. At full takeoff power, that thundering engine sends chills up my spine (on a 95 degree day!)
- The two gorgeous L-39 Albatros jets who made several flights during the day. Their flying was glass-smooth, and their formation work was superb! The L-39 has got to be one of the nicest looking jets around.
- Flying to and from the event with Jim Terry's B-25J Pacific Prowler cruising just off our left wing tip. What a beautiful sight! This was my very first air-to-air experience. Very cool!
- Being a ham radio operator, I really enjoyed the WW-2 radio setup that some of the guys had operating over near the CAF's really nice hangar. They had a complete TCS set going, powered by original dynamotors. They were listening to the Morse signals on the 40 meter band (7 MHz).
- Getting to tour the radio shack in the CAF DFW Wing's R4D-6S. They have ALL of the original radio gear installed, and it looks really superb!
- Meeting and talking with so many great warbird people!

Obviously we had a number of WIXers in attendance. I got to meet Lynn and Steve (great to meet you guys in person!). Sorry I wasn't able to meet anyone else.

Our official VFM photographer, Art Evans, flew to the show aboard Pacific Prowler, shooting pics of Chuckie en route. Likewise, a very nice lady from the B-25 crew (I'm sorry I didn't catch her name) was aboard with us, shooting pics of the Mitchell. I'm looking forward to seeing those shots. I'll try to post some on here once I get hold of them. "Big Dummy" left the house and left his camera bag sitting in the hallway, so he didn't have his camera with him (I apparently had yet another "senior moment"). Maybe some of my cell phone camera pics turned out. Nah...

A big THANKS to the CAF DFW Wing for hosting a great event! I look forward to coming back next year!

Dean, I came over to see if I could find you at Chuckie, but my apologies for not seeking you out.... I got sidetracked talking with Steve S. (We go back quite a way, from when he was involved with the CFM.)

As you said quite a few Wixers were in attendence. Obviously you and CAPFlyer were there, and Bill.....nice pictures. (Bill, in your picture of the Sea Fury, you can see where those nice ladies and gentlemen in the orange suits parked us right over an oil spill... ). Also met up with Lynn Allen and Steve Dickey, and me109me109 (Taylor) was there in his cub, and FG1D Pilot (Doug) brought over the CFM Bell 47.

Dean, I know what you mean about the "chill up your spine" from the Sea Fury on takeoff. I was in the back seat, and when Ronnie applied that second step of power on departure, it was like being strapped to a rocket. We were touching 160+ knots as we turned crosswind, and the low pass we made before departure was at about 200 feet AGL and a very gentle 2** knots. We were back on the downwind leg at Addison in 6 minutes, and that was without going through the Class B airspace.

Bill, I think the reason planes appeared to be leaving about a hour earlier than normal, was due to the line of storms building north of Dallas. No one wanted to take any weather related risks.

Again, a very good day, good weather at Lancaster, and a nice varied selection of aircraft and exhibitors in attendance.

I second what Lynn said, and it was nice to put a couple faces to names as well! I think I'll make this show a regular stop( as long as Chuckie comes back!)
