I have always wondered how in the heck did the engineers go from a single tail to the twin tails...Did the F-14 evolve from the F-111 project?

I was going to ask the very same question.

In a way. Grumman was the builder of the F-111B so they knew what the Navy DIDN'T want and went from there.
The single tail grew into a size too large for the hangar deck without folding so they went to a twin tail.
Better design all the way around, more surface, less complicated and added redundancy.

Wow as always,

Crazy cool Pictures!

I always laugh every time somebody snaps a shot of an impromtu warbird parade, traveling through some set of streets.

The last of the Grummans is somewhat disappointing, not a lot of photographs, but the Republic photos are great and the Dade Packing are very good, anyone ever hear of Dade Packing? no googleing........a very interesting company

Hi ArmyJunk....

Foto 3 on page 17 (grum 198) is definitely NOT A6A assembly. Note the cockpit is NOT side-by-side. Because it is a 2-man in-line cockpit, I'm guessing it to be an F-14, although I'm not sure if the Tomcat has a starboard-side refueling probe.
