Coeur d' Alene is now a trendy resort and I think some were a bit ashamed of the cities most famous flying son.
Today, the airport is busy welcoming private jets of visitors and the home base for wealthy locals. (It's also where they rebuild Areostar twins and home for the turbine kit P-51 relpica).

According to local media some of the airport board members were against the name change citing "safety" issues.
(I don't think there were any crashes when JFK, John Wayne, and Chuck Yeager airports were renamed).

I think the board members wanted to just show off the new multi-million dollar FBO, and pump Jet A into bizjets.

Note to airport board: Don't worry guys, the passengers wil still just call it Coeur d'Alene airport and probably won't seen any Boyington memorial.

Ok, guess it's time for me to wade into this quagmire and throw out my 2 cents. I've heard the negative stories about Boyington. I've heard the negative stories about Yeager. I've heard the negative stories about other famous warriors. I've been an eyewitness to the Duke Cunningham mess.

With all that said, it still does not take away what these men accomplished in time of war. These guys went out and put their a**es on the line time and time again. And there were many many other men that did the same. Some of them died while putting their a** on the line. I have a great amount of admiration for what they did by putting their butts on the line.

Now, with that having been said. I don't think too highly of some of the things these men did away from the cockpit. I definitely think Duke got what he deserved. But it doesn't take away from the fact that they took care of business and got the job done when our country needed them to. It's too bad we can't recognize all the warriors over the years that have put it all on the line for this country.

boyington had his issues as an officer & a gentleman, but nobody should piss on the bonfire of his home town folks for naming the airport after him. to them he was their home town boy, favorite son who did good in ww 2, while drunk, sober, or obnoxious. to me it's nobody's business but his fellow local townies who felt he was worthy of the honor. now, would i name a national museum after him???? that's a different opinion. let's be objective here.
