A book was written about UH-1H 658, and it shoot down resupplying firebase "Eagle's Nest".

"An Eagle's Eye View" by Terry Willman, former cew chief of 658. The shoot down was May 31 1969. We recently sold 658 to get the others up.

Warbirds, not for long.

I understand that Bell Helicopter has a new program going to do factory refurbishments of former military UH-1s. Aparently they see the potential life left in the airframes. They are supposed to be in the process of buying a lot of them up.

One could assume that as they go through the rebuild process their identities will be lost with the factory having the ability to "zero time" them and assign new serial numbers. Of course I can imagine with the losses that were taken in Vietnam, not a whole lot of combat vets (helicopters that is) made it home.

A "civilian" UH-1 is about $300,000 to $400,000 and chances are as the supply of them decreases from the market, they will substantially increase in value.

I can say from experience they do fly like a big heavy powerful Bell 47

The DVD "In the Shadow of the Blade" is simply awesome! After getting tired of the Military Channel commericals over and over, I bought the DVD. Very moving story and well done. It got me more interested in Hueys as well.

You guys with the hots for helicopters need to come to the Midland CAF show this year as we will be doing our "Viet Nam downed pilot rescue" segment, complete with two Hueys, a Cobra, two AD's, O-2, OV-1, Spooky gunship, and a ersatz Commie jet (L-39)...lots of pyro and I know that Doug Jeanes, Eric Downing and Rick Sharpe are anxious to fly AA suppression passes for the rotor wings.

It was pretty neat last year....promises to be better this year.

Helicopters are all owned by a Midland CAF member...he's looking at an H-13K (?) to add to his collection.

Speaking of Rick Sharpe, he owns a restored Huey in mil colors that he keeps at the museum. It has a big 101st emblem on the nose. As tug crew, I've been learning the intricacies of handling it around the ramp, like operating the jack-up dolly wheels and how to hang from the tail handle to balance it while the tug pokes along.
Last April, on Sunday evening after Airshow while we were tying up the last loose ends on the flight line, we were stopped and told to take a break and "Go Fly!" Huh?.... In what I thought was a gi-normous act of thoughtfulness and generosity, Rick already left but had arranged for one of his corporate pilot coworkers to fly us around the airport area on a joyride. and boy we stuffed that Slick full too! Strictly speaking that was my first ever ride in a warbird. I rode an old ****hook to Ft Hood once for a NG media event one time, my only other helo experience. I like the Huey a lot better.
