Didn't someone post a pic from the Air Zoo (IIRC) some kind of Japanese rear engine fighter? It was bright green. What was that?

the flying boat is an aichi h9A, a pre-war design used in the early stages of ww 2. the ju 88 looking bird is a kyushu q1w1 used in anti submarine patrols along the home islands of japan & for twin engined training. slow, & poorly armed, but a lesser known type that would be cool to find & restore.

These photographs come from Captured Enemy Equipment file at the National Archives, all photos are taken after the equipment was in our hands, by looking at all the pictures I would say some are test evaluation, lots are just the troops having some fun flying enemy airplanes....In November I plan on going back and recopy lots of the pictures as I was just learning to use the new digital camera.......Props were also supposed to be removed, no one wanted a last minute Kamikaze attack....

What the heck is #7? (Looks like a mix between a JU-88 and a DO-17)

Definately a Kyushu Q1W1 Tokai (Allied code name Lorna.) It was an ASW patrol plane..there were only 100-150 built. It was designed to have long range and low speed, but it's only defensive armament was a single flexible machine gun in the rear cockpit, making it easy meat for Allied fighters. I built a model of one a few years back..it's just so cute it's irresistable.

I think that may have been me. The plane in question is the Curtiss XP-55 "Ascender" (a deliberate reference to the pusher prop..replace the "c" in Ascender with an "s.") This is the sole survivor of the three prototypes built..one crashed during testing, the other during a post-war airshow. The plane is owned by the Smithsonian, and was in storage for decades. When the Air Zoo entered the Smithsonian partnership program, they were allowed to restore and display the plane.

Many Ki-9s were fitted with steel drums full of explosives, with the intention of turning them into Kamikaze aircraft. Pretty desperate.
