The engine quit by the time of the video. Bill actually bounced over the cop car. :shock:

I'm just hardwired to doubt anything a witness says about an airplane incident. In my soaring club a guy made an off-airport landing in a 1-26, a very basic glider. A couple of guys who watched him land in a field swore – swore! – they saw flames shooting out of the back of it.
I love how they characterize this as a 'plane crash.' A forced landing isn't necessarily a crash.

By defintion, an excellent landing (aircraft reusable).

I could only hope to do half as well in a similar situation.

He did a fantastic job landing. The truly sad part is how close he is to a runway. FLD is just on the other side of the highway from where he came to rest.

What an incredible landing! Question though... in pilot training, are pilots discouraged to land on roadways or do you deal with the best case scenario? I know this is conjecture and a million things would be going through the pilot's mind (their life, the lives of the passengers if applicable, possibly killing somebody on the road), but would the pilot be thinking that if he/she lands on the road safely there will most likely be no damage to the aircraft?

Good to see no one was hurt.

Is it normal in the US to use public roads, highways etc. for emergency landings? I'cant think of any similar episodes here in Europe but I've seen quite a few from the US.
During my Air Force pilot training in Denmark we were always told to use farmfields etc., never roads and definately not busy ones!
