These are typically used to hold cowling pieces on. They are quarter turn quick release type fasteners for areas that get opened frequently for maintenance.
The Hellcat cowling shown below features the use of Dzus fasteners. There is a double row where the lower cowling meets the sides and along the front where it fastens to the nose bowl.

DZUS fasteners are used as quick (1/4 turn) devices for securing removable panels INSIDE the aircraft. They are most often found on instrument panels, eg, radio control boxes, etc. As you know, the radio or other bulky equipment is mounted on racks elsewhere within the aircraft. What the crew sees on the instrument panel is the control box (which is electrically linked to the remote equipment). Virtually all removable instrument panel items --other than gauges-- make use of DZUS fasteners. Don't know for sure, but suspect even the new "glass cockpit" items use them.

I think you are referring to Camlocs, not Dzus fateners. Camlocs have a spring and studs on the shank that engage a cam on the fixed (backside) portion. Dzus fasteners have a cam on the shank that engages a wire spring clip on the fixed portion.

Actually, we're both correct, although you are more correct. The question posed accompanied the patent drawings which are for the heavy-duty DZUS which are indeed used on cowls, etc. The DZUS with which I am familiar are light-duty and are used as I described (and probably came into use after the war). I've never heard them called Camlocs, though it's logical because both styles use an over-the-center cam principle to lock them in the closed position. I will say that I have a box of the light-duty fasteners and they are clearly marked DZUS both on the box and on the individual fastener components.
So now ArmyJunk knows more about DZUS fasteners than he bargained for!
