What did you decide to do about the engine for the Sherman?

I also have a myspace site to track the restoration, but the photobucket site is more general 2nd Armored Division stuff. there is some duplication between the two.

as for the motor....we've done a full tear down and Tom Read is going to bead blast some of the parts. We need new pistons and cylinders. overall we expect the rebuild to cost about 5K - all out of volunteer pocket unless we find generous donors/benefactors (not that this is a totally blatent plea )

great stuff Cindy.

I can still remember my first Sherman. It's on guard duty at the VFW post in my Grandparents hometown of Attica, Indiana. I used to climb all over it as a kid when I would come to visit. I'm glad to see that the members are taking care of her as she has received a fresh coat of paint last year.

One question though. What's the deal with what appears to be a detonated Sherman? Was this taken on a target range?

the guys do a lot of reenactments at different bases - most frequently used is Camp Roberts in Paso Robles. It looks like that's where this was taken, in which case, the tank you see was definitely used for target practice.
When we took the Sherman to the Tamaya Model convention last year, the guys climbed out of the Abrahms and one of them came over and said... 'Wow a Sherman! I've never seen one in one piece!"
I think that says it all!!!!

Would you say that there are quite few examples of vintage WW2 armor scattered across various target ranges throughout the US?

absolutely there are. The 113 I was in in Panama was used as a range marker at Fort Polk, gaping hole in the side and all. The range it warked had a number of shot up hulks on it--I won't commit to a sherman but I am almost positive there were a number of M48's. Obviously the more "tanky" the fort, the more old scrap you'll find. But it's all scrap, sadly. Not much to be salvaged once a 120mm main gun hits one of em, ya know?

there are a number of bulldogs and shermans in the upper mid-west and a few on the east coast. I don't know of any other operational M4A1s though. We also have on display in CNO:

Brings back memories! I used to drive that Carryall around the airport along with the M151.

That Sherman is definitely on the range at Camp Roberts. There are several WWII tanks out on the range I can recall seeing an M3 Stuart and what looked like an M5 Stuart.
