Many aircraft on strikes in the Pacific and European theaters ran low on gas and ditched and crashed. Especially in the Pacific, the missions were long, and extended the aircraft the the edges of the fuel envelope. Any deviation to the original plan due to weather, enemy action or damage, and you will not have the gas to get home.

In addition, the airbases on the ocean tended to move, and not be where you left them. They did nto have that problem in Europe :wink:

Looks like that was a pretty nice ditching job. Looks like if you'd had a crane and could've fished it out, it would've been re-usable.
