I would think Walter is about the highest time 109 pilot around (??) He is very confident and has a lot flying time but from what I have heard he is a little rough on the aircraft.

Walter's original Me109 'ground school instructor' was none other than the legendary Erich Hartmann.

I was once told (if I'm not mistaken by Walter himself) that one of the pitfalls of flying the 109 was getting it off the ground too quickly. Apparently its quite possible to get it airborne before your ailerons have enough authority to maintain control. Considering this reputation it would seem prudent to keep the aircraft pinned during the t/o roll until you have sufficeint speed and are ready for lift off, as Walter does in the video.

And in terms of JDK's comment regarding the whine, it is indeed most disinctive. I've heard the Russell 109 in person and the supercharger can clearly be heard from circuit altitude, distinguishing its sound from that of the Spitfire and Hurricane.

The video was done by me at the small “Hahnweide“ airfield (near Stuttgart, Germany) in 2005. I made there some video for the production of a DVD regarding the only two flying Bf 109 in Germany that year. The other was G4, Red 7. Find here the original video, as well as others, including an video of Red 7:

Here some info about the “Hahnweide” Show for 2007, maybe with two Bf 109 flying:

If you really like the 109, you need to get the DVD-"One Summer-Two Messerschmitts" from Duxford. The trailer for the video is on you-tube. If you go to flyingmachines.tv it will take you there.

Hey Manfred, does that DVD come in region 1 NTSC format? It would make a nice addition to the One Summer Two Messerschmitts video I have.

Ohh, sorry, but this video is currently only available in the European PAL format. This is a decision by the publisher and out of my control. Also any order has to be done via the publisher:

Is the aircraft seen in the first clip still airworthy? If so, is it in the WIX Registry (I don't seem to see it)?

Most of you already know this, but we are rebuilding two flying Bf-109F models that will be powered by DB-601 engines.

Thanks for the reply Manfred; I guess I’ll just have to buy a player that plays all formats then.
