I have exclusive info - could be - rumour that the rare long ago aussie built CA-15 fighter is been rebuilt to fly in australia.

Does anyone know about this?

Everyone knows it was a end of war super version kind of Mustang / MB-5 style design.. it went over the 500mph mark in oz on test flights...

If only that were true!! I did see today a fullscale CA-15 replica being built in metal!! Will post photos if anyone is interested.

Interesting concept Matt. Sort of looks like somesort of the morphed Mustangs at Reno.....first I've ever heard of this but it stands to reason

Unfortunately the original drawings were apparantly accidentally disposed of at the CAC Factory in the 1980's and are not held in the "CAC Drawing Collection" currently stored at the RAAF Museum?

I am told there had been a request to access to the drawings by US interests to build a Reno Racer, and when the drawings were recovered from archives and gathered into a cardboard box for access/copying they were instead thrown out by the cleaners?, a very sad waste.

Common "History" has the CA-15 being scrapped in Melbourne post war after its flight testing, although wishful thinking and "pub talk" has had it lurking in a shed, waiting to be found, that is a highly unlikely outcome.

A "representation" could be built, similar to the MB-5 in the US, using photos and scale plans, and substituted parts like a steel tube fuselage and mustang wing. However to create a full size and accurate "new metal" replica CA-15 would be a major undertaking just to re-create the unique long leg undercarriage, let alone the unique wing and fuselage from new parts.

There are a few CA-15 parts in existance but these are minor cockpit furnishings etc, and not sufficient to make a dent in the workload of a CA-15 replica.


A 1/6 Scale model was built and flown in Melbourne and is on display at the Australian National Aviation Museum.

Hope its true too, but will be surprised to see it happen

I misread your post and only later realised after my reply to the opening post by sabredriver that you were comfirming a full scale metal replica IS actually underway?

can you give more info on where, whom, how, why and when?

and post the pictures you mentioned??

That's an exciting prospect. I'd love to see one of those take to the air again. It was an incredible airplane from that sounds of it.

You'll need to set up a photobucket or equivalent account; work of moments and no harder than oading them onto a site that hosts its own photos. Before loading them up PLEASE resize to no more than 700 - 800 pixels wide.

I've already addressed some small problems with the aircraft to the museum involved.. but only time will tell if they correct it to keep the purists happy

Wow that is pretty cool. I would rather see a mock up in a museum than nothing. If there is noe example of something left, I think it is great to make a 1/1 scale replica.
