Among various requests to ID artifacts found by hunters etc., I have a recent request to look at an airframe and try to do something positive with it. It is just a frame, little else. It was in a thick wooded remote (boat access plus a tough bushwhack) area until recently when Homeland Security added lots of Border Patrol and stations. The area now is rapidly turning into a lakeside housing development for Patrol Agents.

It is currently "salvage" material for the logging contractor clearing the lots and road right of ways. He would like to see a positive outcome. My hopes would be a museum with the resources to make it a display.

This needs saving. A Hurricane is an incredibly difficult machine to restore. The tubing is round section, cold worked at each joint to form a square or rectangular section. The main spar is multifaceted, only two machines exist worldwide to do this. The tail spar is similarly complex but there is a Cranfield I of T design replacement.

I would suggest that interested parties put aside differences and save this baby before it gets trashed.

PS, If I had done a Spit project in place of a Hurri it would have been finished years ago!

Hi Canada TD,

Thats what I'm trying to do but it seems the problem between us two might not help thats why I ask Peter to us a third party.

I have two musuem right now who are looking for Hurrie airframes and would be idea home for this.

Cheers RER

Good luck! The Hurricane is a woefully underappreciated aircraft so anyone who does anything to save one gets my support and gratitude

i would say if its only a frame its not worth it, how do you even know its a hurry? its most likely bent and rusted and just a frame, a piece of scrap metal.

Col. Rohr wrote:OK Guys,

If its the airframe that I'm thinking of then its going to be a good starting point for a static restoration.

Canadian TD you and i both know how much it will cost to put a wreck Hurrie back into the air.

So anyway nothing is going to happen till Peter decides what he wants to do. He's been given the best offer he can get from Maine and guys before you start saying I'll take it their is a process that has to go on here in Maine for recovery of WWII aircraft you can thank certain people conected with the Maine Air Musuem for that. Rather not go into the Politics of it.

So Peter I await you contact. I'll be home after 6PM tonight feel free to call me or e-mail me or do what i sid go thru Mike C or Leo if you like but lets get this done before we have snow on the ground.

Rob

rohr, this peter is probably talking crap anyway & it doesnt look likely he will contact you or anyone, are you sure the hurri even exists? have you seen it? if so just go take it, i would, beats wasting time with people like this

Neil Rose had a good frame and wings and it took him 29 YEARS to get it flyable. There are some joints in the frame that have 108 parts to it, why didn't just weld it!

I'd agree, you don't have to make it 100% original, just weld the joints, and make it 90% original. It's experimental anyway.

Here's a photo of that joint/splice:
