A friend is building me a (desktop) model of one of my favourite aircraft. Can anyone please post or link to a colour photograph of a B-58 Hustler prototype? It should be aluminium, white and red. It may (probably does) look like this simply astounding model.

Many thanks, Don

Howdy

The red and white B-58 model is based on the TB-58 trainer version. You can tell by the extra windows on the sides of the cockpit. Compare it to the model in the last photo.

Try this link.

It may not be the prototype, but it's a nice B-58 paint scheme, and it isn't the TB-58.

I just wish someone could actually find a picture of the single B-58 that was supposedly painted in the SEA camo scheme. When I was in the AF I saw the Tech Order that showed how the camo scheme was supposed to be painted, and I had heard that one was painted that way but that no pictures actually existed.

I think the B-52 in the first pic is jealous. The Hustler looks like it is ready to go supersonic just parked on the ramp 8)

WOW! Thank you everybody, here I am in another time zone, I go away for 24 hours and look what happens! I couldn't wish for more, thank you. Don

BTW here's a good source of B-58 background, by a guy (Joe Baugher) who's researched it with a fine tooth comb. Amazing aircraft IMHO.
http://home.att.net/~jbaugher2/b58.html

A point of interest in that fact-sheet "The cost of the 118 aircraft now scheduled through FY 1961 was estimated at about 3 billion dollars, which made each B-58 literally worth more than its weight in gold." Joe Baugher

That's really interesting Connery. I've cruised the net and seen that model (link above) but I put it down to an urban myth. Can you remember whether that model scheme is likely to be at all like what you would have read in the tech order? Many thanks, Don

I don't suppose there are any B-58 airframes in private hands, like in a private museum? It would be awesome if something like the Collings Foundation could get their hands on one and get it in the air...

Cott !! Bite your tongue ! A B-58 ? Never happen. THe NMUSAF and Air Force brass would go nuts. The unlucky, obviously unstable individual who would try on a B-58 would BE nuts.

Seriously the technology used to produce the B-58 was on the edge, the inspections necessary to insure airworthiness would be prohibitive, parts would be unobtainable. Feeding 4 J-79s would be unbearable,...and then you've got those little bitty tires which have a tendency to catch fire.

We have a saying around the F-4 " The impossible is possible". I don't think that would apply in the case of a B-58.
