Was wondering what everyone's favorite lesser known war movies/film you like?

I've always liked the movie "Mr. Roberts. Kinda sad when the ship got news of Mr. Robert's death but then Ens. Pulver throws the captains "stinkin'" palm tree overboard.

I've always liked "Kelly's Heroes", but that is a satire.
I do like HBO's "When Trumpets Fade".

Kelly's Heroes is one of my favorite movies. I got the song "Burning Bridges" burned on a CD. I don't know, something about that song and riding a Sherman tank....pretty cool. :D

I also like "Airforce"! Since I like early WWII stuff. I like the scenes at Clark when there was an air raid and everyone runs to their stations. A classic! Loved the shots of the P-39's taking off. Anyone know what field was used for that shot?

I only saw a small part of it when I was a kid. The only reason I remember the movie was from seeing some wacko ride an A-bomb down yelling, YAHOO....YIPPEEE!! Or something like that.

Oh ya, what about Fail Safe? Good shots of B-58's!

The classic, historically accurate, all-sides sensitive "Von Ryan's Express."
Only because I like to sing Sinatra Karaoke...

that wacko was slim pickens, who was always cast as a hick, but a hilarious 1 at that. & i hope you saw the scene before the bomb ride where he does the survival kit check list........ can't remember it word for word but went something like this...... 1 .45 automatic, two boxes of spare ammunition, 3 bandages, 2 c- rations, $200.00 in escape money, 1 pack of chewing gum, 4 condoms..... wow a guy could have a good time with all that stuff!!!!

Who could forget Slim Pickens in 1941?

"Hollywood?"

Sim Pickens: "GRRRRUUUUUNNNNNNTTTTTT" Splash goes the boot in the can...

If that doesn't conjure an image for you, you are not a real Wixer!

Here's some of the greatest quotes from Slim Pickens in Dr. Stranglove!

Well, boys, we got three engines out, we got more holes in us than a horse trader's mule, the radio is gone and we're leaking fuel and if we was flying any lower why we'd need sleigh bells on this thing... but we got one little budge on them Rooskies. At this height why they might harpoon us but they dang sure ain't gonna spot us on no radar screen!

Stay on the bomb run, boys! I'm gonna get them doors open if it harelips ever'body on Bear Creek!

Survival kit contents check. In them you'll find: one forty-five caliber automatic; two boxes of ammunition; four days' concentrated emergency rations; one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills; one miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible; one hundred dollars in rubles; one hundred dollars in gold; nine packs of chewing gum; one issue of prophylactics; three lipsticks; three pair of nylon stockings. Shoot, a fella' could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.

Well, I've been to one world fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing I ever heard come over a set of earphones. You sure you got today's codes?

Well, boys, I reckon this is it - nuclear combat toe to toe with the Roosskies. Now look, boys, I ain't much of a hand at makin' speeches, but I got a pretty fair idea that something doggone important is goin' on back there. And I got a fair idea the kinda personal emotions that some of you fellas may be thinkin'. Heck, I reckon you wouldn't even be human bein's if you didn't have some pretty strong personal feelin's about nuclear combat. I want you to remember one thing, the folks back home is a-countin' on you and by golly, we ain't about to let 'em down. I tell you something else, if this thing turns out to be half as important as I figure it just might be, I'd say that you're all in line for some important promotions and personal citations when this thing's over with. That goes for ever' last one of you regardless of your race, color or your creed. Now let's get this thing on the hump - we got some flyin' to do.

Another thing about Dr. Strangelove, during the low level flying scenes, the shadow of the airplane is a B-17! What a great movie....

Thx for the classic Slim Pickens dialogue ... I, too, could hear Slim a-sayin' ever' word!

B-17 shadow cast by a BUF ... another classic!

Speaking of deliberate twisting of reality like that ... don't forget the "in flight" engine sounds of their BUF ... yep, recip engines in perfect tune ... or was that another movie and it's been WAY too long since I've seen DSL?

I had my copy borrowed and of course never returned a long time ago ... literally the other day I saw it at Wal-Mart for about $5 -$6. Need to go pick it up.

Wade

PS: remember George C. Scott? "Heck, Mr. President, Ten - Twenty thousand, TOPS!"
