My Grandpa

Tue Apr 17, 2007 6:47 am

7/4/16-4/16/07

He was part of the greatest generation.

During WWII he ran the 3rd nitrating vat at the Sandusky Plum Brook TNT plant.

Good bye!

O2, I'm sorry for your loss. As my best friend wrote to me just before he died, "Treasure forever your memories."

So sory for your loss. Did you ever talk with your grandfather about his war time job? That doesn't sound like the safest place on earth to be working. God speed.

May he rest in peace.
Our prayers are with your family.

We talked all the time about his job making TNT. He worked doubles. Usually 3pm to 7am. One night, someone fell asleep, and they did not turn the valve in time, and 2000 lbs of fresh TNT that he was pumping out almost exploded right there. The bunkers where they stored the stuff still stand today. He was not a front line combat soldier, but I'm sure he blew up lots of stuff with his TNT. I have a wood crate from the plant.

Sorry to hear of your loss. My grandmother turned 85 and served in the W.A.V.E.S. during WWII. I've made it a priority to spend as much time with her as possible over the last several years knowing she won't be with us much longer due to health issues.
