How much chalk does it take to hold a B-29?

On a B-29 you generally fill the bombays with chalk to keep it on the ground. Should a windstorm (or in the case of Kansas a TORNADO) appear, you can then fill the rest of the fuselage with chalk and pile bags of chalk on the wings.

When you are ready to move the airplane, you call the local elementry school for a field trip to come and draw pictures of the B-29 on the ramp (actually draw on the concrete) in CHALK. We supply the chalk.

In about 5 minutes, the kids have removed all the chalk from the plane and it is light enough to fly again. Much quicker than having the normal ground crew do it.

Kind of sad seeing her sit out in the elements after all the work that's been done on her so far..."two steps forward and one step back"

Too bad that they weren't able to keep on schedule. The last time I visited Doc was in 04 and was told that she would be ready to fly in 06. In 03 they said 05. In 02 they said 04.....

Too many changes with the people running the program.

When you are around warbirds a long time, you quickly learn that "next year" (or whatever time frame mentioned) means much longer than that.

Man, they still have many, many years of work left to do on that airplane. Looks like just the big pieces are on. Doesn't seem fair to all of those hard working volunteers that did all of that great work, to have to continue it all outside.

I sure hope they get it indoors soon. It sure is a good looking airplane...for now.
