Alabama Locator

Wed Apr 11, 2007 8:16 am

The Alabama Locator is now on-line. It can be found at…
http://www.aerialvisuals.ca/Locator.php?Region=AL

Unfortunately there are number of questions for which I am looking for answers. If you are from the area, or have passed through and might be able to help, I would appreciate it if you could take a look at the list and let me know if you can fill in any of the gaps.

BTW… Michigan is next

Regards,

Mike

Yes, there is, it is part of the Southern Museum of Flight, located immediately south of the Birmingham International Airport. It's serial number is 54-1753 if my photo is correct. The actual airframe is located on Airport property, on the south side.

mrhenniger wrote:#2: Apparently there are some helos displayed at Birmingham International Airport. If so where?

Yes, there is a small display at the ANG entrance on the north side of the airport. It includes a UH-1V 67-16086, CH-54 69-18479, OH-6 71-6243. There are also an RF-4, and an RF-84 at the gate too. The Southern Museum of Flight's CH-54 is located on the south side of the airport, along with their other outdoor static birds.

mrhenniger wrote: #13: Is there an US Army Aviation Museum in Ozark? If so do they have a UH-1?

Yes, the Museum of Army Aviation is just outside Ozark, at Fort Rucker. They have pretty much every helicopter the US Army ever operated, and even some they didn't. They have four or five UH-1's on display inside, and outside the museum.

Hope that this helps Mike. I can get you more details on the Museum of Army Aviation if you need it. I was there last November. I was at the Southern Museum of flight in March.

Cheers,
Richard

PS. There is also an airworthy P-51D (44-74009 N-51KB) located at Birmingham International Airport, as well as at least two T-6's and a Yak-50 tail dragger)

Just came back from Maxwell AFB this past weekend. Nothing new but an observation - they have an F-105, F-4, F-86, F-101, F-100, B-52, T-38 and B-25. Also a really cool sculpture(?) of the Wright Flyer.

Anyway, all A/C are painted in gloss Imron paint - and boy do they look fabulous! Not accurate - as they should be flat finish - but they still look awesome and well cared for. You cannot really get to see them unless you have a sponsor to get on the base.

Now compare this to the museum in Birmingham - they have a number of A/C on display outside, including a F-14. All but for the A-12 and Tomcat are rotting away. Paint peeling, rust all over, just a really sad state of condition <sigh> too bad they do not have a hangar they could put them in or a connection that they could at least repaint them in a gloss coat - then all they would have to do is wash and wax every calender quarter.

Alas. . . .

Sadly you are exactly right. I volunteered at the museum for a little while hoping to help take care of some of the issues with the aircraft. Unfortunately the people "running" the show had other ideas. So I no longer help out there. I donate my time to another group that wants to preserve the aircraft (flying examples) for generations to come.

If I come across any of these aircraft I will pass the info along.

#4 - Yes, there is a UH-1 mounted on a pole north of Enterprise, on the west side of hwy 231. It wears a very odd camo scheme.

#8 - The F-86 used to be located on a cement base in town but I believe it was moved to the front of the aviation school at the Ozark, AL airport. It shares the lawn with a Learjet. Both are visible from Hwy 231.

#9 - The F-16A is displayed with an F-4 and at least one F-84 outside the gate at the AL Air National Guard, at the Montgomery Airport (Dannelly Field).

#11 - There is no C-130 "on display" at Maxwell AFB. The AF Reserve flies the C-130 from that base. They transitioned from C-7s in 1983 to the C-130E and to the C-130H in 1986.

#12 - See #8.

#15. The C-1 was part of the Wiley Sanders warbird collection but was sold many months ago.

#17. The F-4 is on a post in front of the AFROTC building at the university.

Did you also know about the Grumman Cougar sitting at the FBO at Moton Field in Tuskeegee, AL? How about the AH-1 Cobra on a stick on Hwy 231 in Troy, AL? Or the medevac UH-1 displayed at a VFW 1 mile south of the Eufaula, AL airport on Hwy 431?

By the way, the sharp looking warbirds at Maxwell AFB have looked ratty at times too. It just so happens that all the static aircraft were freshly painted over the past few months. I don't know what the cycle is but it seems to happen every 4 or 5 years.

Sorry for the multiple posts - but I realized that your Maxwell list did not include the O-1 Birddog on a post outside of the Civil Air Patrol National Headquarters, also on base.

I did't realize this thread had come back to life.

MIKE K wrote:Mike if I can find any information on your list I will be glad to help.

Any help you can provide will be warmly received. Thanks in advance. If you are not familiar with the Locator here are some tips for contributing new information...

In a Locator listing clicking a green + indicates you are contributing data for a complete new site (one not already listed). Clicking a red + indicates you are answering a request for help with an entry. Clicking a blue + indicates you are providing information about a site that may not have been requested, but will help make the information for the entry more complete.

Thanks.

I am looking at Enterprise using GE. I don't see a route 231. Did you perhaps intend 27, 51, 84 or 167?

mrhenniger wrote:#8: Apparently there is a F-86 displayed near highway 80 in Montgomery. Can you confirm? If so where exactly is it?

Ken wrote:#8 - The F-86 used to be located on a cement base in town but I believe it was moved to the front of the aviation school at the Ozark, AL airport. It shares the lawn with a Learjet. Both are visible from Hwy 231.

I already had the F-86 noted at the airport, I just didn't realized this was the location of the college.

mrhenniger wrote:#9: There may be a F-16 displayed in Montgomery. Can you confirm? If so where exactly is it?

Is this a new addition? The GE image doesn't show the F-16.

Noted.

Noted. Do you remember when the Sanders collection was closed to the public and dispersed?

Ken wrote:#17. The F-4 is on a post in front of the AFROTC building at the university.

OK... I will need some help with this one. Could you give me the coordinates? GE is the best tool for this, however Google Maps can be used if you don't have GE installed. To read how to do this go to...

http://www.aerialvisuals.ca/Locator.html#Maps

...and scroll down to "How do I use Google Maps to get coordinates?"
Ken wrote:Did you also know about the Grumman Cougar sitting at the FBO at Moton Field in Tuskeegee, AL?

Already have that one in the locator. See...

Ken wrote:How about the AH-1 Cobra on a stick on Hwy 231 in Troy, AL?

I have a UH-1 in my notes which has not made it into the Locator yet. Can you confirm it is a AH-1 or UH-1? Where exactly is it? Helos are very difficult to find using Satellite images, expecially AH-1s.

Ken wrote:Or the medevac UH-1 displayed at a VFW 1 mile south of the Eufaula, AL airport on Hwy 431?

This is another recent addition to my note, one that has not made it into the Locator yet. If you happen to know the coordinates or a near-by intersection please share! :-)

Actually the Locator has the O-1 listed.

Thanks for all of the new information. I will upload the changes to the Locator tonight.

Let's see, I may have been wrong about the UH-1 In Enterprise. I have no doubt that it's there, but maybe I was remembering the one in Ozark. No time to confirm. Sorry.

The F-86 in Ozark, I believe was formerly located in the city of Montgomery and moved to its new location in Ozark roughly 6 years ago.

The GE image of Montgomery is old. The F-16 and the other jets are re-located a new gate approx 1 mile west of the spot where you see them in the GE shot.

The Sanders collection in Troy has always been private although visitors are sometimes welcome in small numbers during business hours. The C-1 and several other airplanes have been sold over the past 5 years but many vintage aircraft remain hangared.

The Cobra in Troy is in a memorial park at 31.785821975844552 -85.96359729766845

The Eufaula UH-1 is at 31.940126870353968 -85.13279914855957

Good Luck,
Ken
