It would be cool to convert it back to it's original condition.

sounds like a fun airplane and it's really exciting how it has real combat experience... :)

This aircraft been for sale for quite a while. I remember seeing it somewhere 2+ years ago for sale. If I remember right they are looking for like $750,000 for it. Is probably a bit high priced even with the combat experience.
Now they are trying the ebay method, maybe they are now willing to take a lower price.

To answer all of you in one fell swoop.
1: The origial asking price was $350,000 which isn't out of line for a Super Widgeon. Widgeon sales go in cycles and right now they are in abundance.
I have a friend who has one for sale and he couldn't get a decent price for his either. It's now in the back of his hangar, pickled and waiting for better days.

2: I believe he has all the original logs, the airplane was never in military service.

3: If you've ever flown a Ranger powered Widgeon you'd know WHY they converted to bigger engines and the only reason to go back would be for museum display. The Ranger Widgeon was underpowered and with the fixed pitch props had a "negative rate of climb" on one engine.
A Ranger Widgeon with constant speed props can be a decent performer IF you keep it light and don't over do the interior appointments.

The ebay listing says that the plane sank a U-boat on July 11, 1942 off New Jersey.

According to Clay Blair's "Hitler's U-boat War" which is the definitive book on the subject in English, no U-boat was sunk on or very near that date. My reading of that section of the book showed no U-boat activity in the NJ area at that time, so it may be questionable whether this a/c even made an attack on a U-boat. (the record on whale attacks is unclear...)

Let the buyer beware.

The auction, btw, is now over with the bid of $120,000 being short of the reserve.

Kevin
