to me that seems ridiculous. But I guess they're hiding the fact that the engine didn't come with it.

Speaking of Gas Station Decorations, is the B-17 up in Oregon(?) back in one piece? Last time I saw something on it they where trying to clean it up some.

Also, how many other birds are still atop something pedestrian?

Yeah, it is a BT-13 that many people over the years have tried to buy but the owner would not sell. I seem to recall the owner telling a story about how his father bought it when he was a kid and it has been in the family ever since.

I see the fuel pumps have gone, MAYBE that means the canopy might be coming down at some point in the near future.

Looking at all the yellow tape off to the right side of the picture I would say it's more likely they are installing new UST's and pumps.

putting old planes up on diners, gas stations, etc, is true americana of the 50's & 60's, but now it's out of date. most gas stations today are better landscaped than my own yard!!!!

Always the cynic, I've got to imagine that the "many people" who've tried to buy it simply haven't offered enough $$$ to make the owner forget the "family ties" to the aircraft.

Mudge (risking redundancy) the cynic

A really good friend of mine offered the guy actually quite a bit more than what many would think it is worth just for the "novelty" of having what is sort of a local landmark. I'm sure some day, someone will get it, but with the relatively "cheap" prices that you can get a BT-13 project for it may be a while. I actually think it is kind of cool sitting on top of the gas station, you will not see many like that any more. It used to be on the main road but as with many of the old highways it has now been bypassed.

RE: The B17 at the Bomber Restaurant in Oregon...

As of last May (2006), "Lacey's Lady" was still "flying" over nothing (gas pumps removed years ago) in front of the restaurant, minus her restored nose...with an audience of several pigeons.

Not a warbird or a gas station, but I worked at this place for a year or so back in the '80s. It was a restaurant at Tri-County airport in Broomfield, CO..I heard it was closed and abandoned by 1990, and when I looked it up on Google Earth recently it was gone.

Along these lines, have any of you seen the C-97 that's a motel billboard in Dodgeville , Wisconsin? It flew in on a one trip only. The little airport is gone now.
Local tall stories tell that it's current location is where they got it stopped. Also the new owner had guys with deer rifles at the end of the runway to take out the main tires when it got to that point.
The main gear was wider than the runway and it allegedly threw quite a cloud of grass, dirt and trash as it rolled along.
I'm from Texas but my inlaws are from SW Wisconsin. Nice state and I really like Midwestern women obviously, but I'm sorry. Dodgeville is strange.

Could you provide a google or yahoo map of the location?
