Warbird Information Exchange

The wing tank elimination became effective after a/c 3075, (MCR 505)Master Change Request 505.
I believe the British Mk IV kept the tanks as an option. The FAA Museums Corsair was built in July 1944.

Corsair ailerons were made of wood after a/c 94, MCR 20. This was retroactively fitted to earlier Corsairs.
I've never seen a picture of a Corsair with fabric covered flaps as someone in this thread has mentioned.

The F4U-5 was the start of metal covered outboard wings.

If memory serves it was only the inboard flap which was fabric covered.

The Cavanaugh Fg1D has -5 wings on it. I heard they were put on when it was raced back in the 60's. Because of the cannon ports, were are extending the 20mm barrels and making in to a F4U-1C.

My outer flaps are (rather were) fabric covered. I also understand that some early Corsairs which were destined for Marine Corps service did in fact not have the wing fold mechanisims installed at the factory. One shot at Oshkosh '05 shows the judges in front of the F3A-1 and you can see the outer right flap. Sorry I don't have other photos at hand.

You were correct he got back around 18:50 to 19:05 10 March 07 as I assisted in putting it back into the barn.

Does any one has other angles/profile shots of this fine bird?? We believe is the X FAH 603 Buno 123168. The R/dive strut assy had a #3 only c. 1960s. Photo via AEC.

Yes, that's Archie in the cockpit. Note that the markings on the Cavanaugh Corsair have been updated to represent those worn by Archie's F4U-1 during his early days with VMF-115 squadron. The "kill" markings on the fuselage represent his factual tally as well. He was a super nice fella, though he's since passed away since this thread was begun six years ago.

When he came to conn. in 2005 for the " corsairs over conn" event, I had my picture taken with him. I was reanacting as a pacific pilot in it was in front of marines dream. Unfortunately, I never saw the picture nor have I received a copy. For 7 years now I've tried to find it even contacting his wife,( who took a picture as well,) but to no avail
