A fighter plane from the Warhawk Museum in Nampa is featured in the new Tom Cruise movie "Valkyrie," which tells the story of the failed July 20, 1944, plot by members of the German Army to assassinate Adolph Hitler.

The plane, a Curtiss P-40 fighter plane is a British Royal Air Force plane in the film.

"The reason Tom Cruise wanted that airplane was because of its authenticity," said Sue Paul, executive director of the Warhawk Air Museum. "He’s a real stickler for authenticity. He was very excited to have that plane for that scene."

The plane was used during filming in the spring in Apple Valley, Calif., Paul said. She was on the set during one day of filming.

"It was just a kick," Paul said. "It was about 112 degrees out in the desert."

Paul said museum officials didn't realize the kind of publicity the plane would get in the movie's trailer and in a Newsweek article. The trailer features a scene where Cruise looks up to see the P-40 flying overhead.

The Warhawk Air Museum is at 201 Municipal Drive in Nampa. Phone, 465-6446. The museum's winter hours are: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday to Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; closed Sunday and Monday.

Thanks but I thought they'd gotten the XB-70 from the AFM! :)

I'm kidding. I hope to get out there and visit Nampa one of these days.

Rich

Those are very good folks running the museum. The whole (wonderful) family is involved! You really owe it to yourself to visit and introduce yourselves as Wixers! Plus you get to see some very nicely kept airplanes as a bonus.

I first met John Paul about 20 years ago. About 10 minutes after
saying hello I was in his P-40N and he was taking my photo 8)
A good bunch of folks there :!: :!:
I was later able to introduce him to my dear friend P-40 ace Cy Gladen
who got the same treatment :P
BTW John Paul's new nickname is "Sidekick" :)

Rich, feel free to name drop, but really, no need. They are very nice out there & John-Paul is also a Wixer. So they would know what you are all about!! HA! Great place to visit with the family as well. You will no doubt enjoy your time there.

It seems like I have been reading about the Paul family P-40s my whole life. (Was one of them really dug up on some farm?) But when I see the words John Paul together I get an immediate flashback to Kirk Douglas in a PBJ calling John Wayne back at base in "Harm's Way"..... "Come in John Paul, Come in John Paul...."  Sorry just feeling silly today.

There is a display at the museum that shows the "Harvest Day".
I wish we could grow warbirds like that in Colorado.
