Just thought I'd summarise that for those with less patience.

I got a chuckle out of that one!

Stop it, you two...stop it right now. It's this kind of thread that runs the risk of...

evolving into...

another Ron Burgundy moment.

I hope you're both happy now...

I'm sure the originator of said post was indicating the utter lack of airworthiness of dataplates. >_>

Dear Mr. Wolverine,

Are you the Wolverine from X-Men or a different Wolverine?

As Sgt. Hulka once said, "Lighten up, Francis".

I saw where TIGHAR, the group that has been looking for Amelia
Earhart, went to look at the P-38. They are claiming they found her
plane as the plane found is from the same company and the rivit
patterns match those of Amilia's missing plane. They cannot explain
how it ended up on a beach in Wales other than to say it was a
navigational error on part of the navigator. They also said there was
a note with something about taking a right at Albuquerque, that they
are at a loss to explain

Kid all you want, but TIGHAR is claiming they've already positively identified Noonan's thong on the same beach.

Before everyone got the giggles, I was just saying that aircraft isn't going to fly again. You might get the dataplate to fly by rolling a 90% new aircraft under it, but if you really want to do that (and aren't just blowing smoke) there's projects out there more likely to fly and certainly a lot cheaper to rebuild.

Recovered, displayed wrecks have a role in showing people today what the sacrifices made in W.W.II were, which illustrate the risks and personal losses in a different way to zimming around the sky, useful though that is.

IMHO TIGHAR isn't worth getting excited about in this case - the IWM and RAFM are the ones to watch in the mix.

But if you really want to know, ask a pilot. Just don't cash the cheque.

Regards,

And besides, you know pilots: Big watch, little *&*^%, looking for a place to cash a cheque... :P

*takes cover in the mud* :axe:

I haven't been to Palwaukee in about 7 years either, but I *think* the last time I was there, it was sitting in the backyard on it's gear. Is that place even still there?

It was as of January '06 - see my post:

http://warbirdinformationexchange.org/p ... =palwaukee

The Lightning replica is much less detailed than the one at March ARB; but it probably wasn't meant for close-ups!

The only difference between a pilot and a Texas tuck driver, is one has a big belt buckle.

look closely --- the stars and bars are visible on the upper wing. Thats pretty good. The most important part of a P-38 and the one that would be hardest to restore is the center section. the booms wings gondola etc etc can all be re-built. (glacier girl and white lightnin) UNTIL a PROPER survey is done by QUALIFIED mechanics (not TIGERS) no one knows the internal condition of the AC. quit killing it before you know ... and thanks for the SIG IDEA...it works well.
