The B-17D "Swoose" now has her 'bathtub' in place!

can anyone identify it as to squadron, group, etc.

The last I had heard the museum planned to restore the aircraft to a point that it would be OD over gray, carry the Swoose artwork, and retain most of it's bomber configuration. I don't believe the Swoose art work currently on the aircraft is the original. I think it was repainted while sitting outside.

I think that is probably the best compromise. The airplane will look like a bomber more than a transport and will be the Swoose. I actually opened the crew door and looked inside during a tour of the Garber Facility and was surprised by how extensive the executive interior was. (Honest, that door hinge was already broken!) I wonder if they will get Swoozy Kurtz to come to the dedication?

Frank Kurtz, the pilot who flew 40-3097 through much of WWII, first dubbed it "The Swoose," and was twice responsible for the continued existence of this historic B-17D. I'm sure, given the strong family connection, the NMUSAF would be honored for her to take part in any rededication ceremony of the plane that is, in point of fact, her namesake.

I hope she does attend the dedication ceremony. Swoosie Kurtz is as much a part of the history of the "Swoose" as Margaret Polk is to the "Memphis Belle".

BTW, Swoosie is appreciative of the history of her father's airplane. Many years ago, I watched her talk about the "Swoose" on Leno's show. She had very positive things to say about the airplane and her father.

Was there any relation between Frank Kurtz and Ray Kurtz? Ray was also a USAAF B-17 pilot in the MTO (IIRC). He later on to fly about seven B-17 missions for the fledgling Israeli Air Force in 1948...including the first bombing mission over Cairo.
